I've liked Chavez since his Oakland days.

My assumption has been that we are going to get a front end reliever, probably Britton, and a 3rd tier starter (think Jake Odorizzi). Given Chavez's swingy-ness I wonder if he replaces the starter or if he's going to be one of three guys.

This feels like ‘we need another Montgomery in the pen because some combination of Darvish being dead and Chatwood being better off dead means Montgomery isn’t going back to the pen anytime soon’.

Yeah and at the very least get some stability in the pen the next couple of weeks and then do something else on the 31st.

I was actually sorta intrigued by Thomas, but this is a move you make in a heartbeat. At best, Thomas is a pitch-ability left, with a likely ceiling as a 4/5 starter. A good scouting department should be able to find those guys, and we have plenty of guys with similar ceilings to Thomas.

This is a really excellent move to add a solid arm without giving up any big assets.

Seems like his stuff is playing fine out of the pen. Velocity is up from last year to where it was at his peak. His Contact% is way down. Hardly walking anyone. Homers are a big problem. But maybe they are trying to Dan Haren it and Cub Defense his way to them being solo homers.

Either way, he's Luke Farrell but more dependable. Probably a smart addition with the rotation as it is and Morrow's questionable health.

The dong numbers are also much worse for him in the arcade Texas park this year (top home run park this year).

7 HR, .372 wOBA, .557 SLG in 28 IP at home.

3 HR, .262 wOBA, .330 SLG in 28 1/3 IP on the road.

Yeah we said the same with Chatwood blah blah blah. But maybe there’s something to this for Chavez. Whatever the case it’s fine depth that can perhaps be a swingman and he’s a better option on paper than the Luke Farrells.
