If mocking the Brewers is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

FWIW, this isn't just Cubs fanboys/meatballs that are scratching their heads at Milwaukee's moves. Plenty of national writers/commentators/experts were scratching their heads too. Rosenthal thought it was weird enough he was questioning reporting it.

This is my 18th year as a national baseball writer, but on Tuesday I experienced a first: Never before had I received information that seemed so unrealistic, I was hesitant to even go with it.

On Friday, I had reported on Twitter that the Milwaukee Brewers were in serious discussions with the Baltimore Orioles, but I did not know who the Brewers were targeting — second baseman Jonathan Schoop, right-hander Kevin Gausman or both.

When the Brewers landed third baseman Mike Moustakas that night and announced they intended to move Travis Shaw to second, it seemed reasonable to rule out Schoop for Milwaukee. But about 25 minutes before the deadline, I received information that the Brewers were targeting Schoop, then confirmed it with a second source.

The idea made no sense to me, but I had followed my normal reporting process, and at that moment who was I to judge? My job is to report, not play general manager. So I reported the Schoop discussions between the Orioles and Brewers on Twitter, then talked about them cautiously on MLB Network, openly admitting I did not know what was going on.

Of course his next line was "Cubz Rule Brewerz Drool" so who knows.

Archer to the Pirates for Meadows and Glasnow.. Am I crazy for thinking Tampa easily got away with a steal?

There’s also a chance the Pirates just picked up a solid starter in exchange for Juan Cruz and Chris Coghlan.

Damn, I need to trademark that.

Kelley has given up 26 home runs in his last 90 major league innings. That's incredible.

i had forgotten just how bad he was last year, wow

Matt Andriese delivered a similar gift after being traded to Arizona:

Relief is Arizona’s most glaring weakness, and last week’s acquisition of Matt Andriese from the Rays hasn’t paid dividends just yet: Andriese took the loss last night, and has allowed four earned runs and three home runs in four innings of work with his new club.

Ouch.

I had forgotten Shawn Kelly was a baseball player and not some non descript Irish pub owner.

Is that called pulling a Warren or a WIlson?

The dude now has a 3.18 career ERA in 408 innings when pitching for anyone other than the Cubs. I’m still pretty miffed at how that Castro trade panned out. I know the Cubs eventually got Chapman out of Warren, but he could have pitched to expectations and the Cubs could have traded a different bum reliever back to New York instead.

Pretty sure he's going on a rehab assignment soon.

That was Bryant and he already relapsed.

He's done 1, if not 2, sim games in the last weekish.

There was a July 15 article claiming he hoped to do a minor league rehab starting in one week (which would have been a week ago).

He did a sim game a week after that article, July 22 and was supposedly set to do another July 26. But 6 days later this article game out.

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/cubs/cubs-no-hurry-get-drew-smyly-back-mound

“He threw on the side the other day,” Joe Maddon said. “I didn't get anything negative. I didn't get to watch it because I was kind of busy, but nobody said anything bad about it. It ended up not being a sim game, that's all I know. But there was nothing, not like he's hurting, I didn't get any of that.”

........

“His next step will be a sim game, it sounds like,” Theo Epstein said. “Trying to pick the right day as we figure out his timing and go off how he's feeling too.”

The natural progression after a sim game would be sending him out on a rehab start, but the Cubs aren't pushing it. They're going to let Smyly take his time to get back to the mound.

“I mean, it'll depend on how he's feeling and how it goes,” said Epstein. “We don't want to rush into a rehab assignment because then you start the clock, and there's no rush. We'll make sure he's really good and ready.”

So he's not close.

I believe there's a clause in the CBA that says TJ guys can be on a rehab assignment for up to 30 days, so I'd imagine the plan is to bring him back right when rosters expand. Any sooner and it either says great things about his progress or terrible things about faith in our current pitchers.

If he’s throwing well and comes back say August 17th or whatever I don’t know if it says terrible things about our current pitchers. He’d be replacing Duensing or Chatwood most likely and they suck and Duensing can be cut or either could be phantomed DL’d
