Our next TOR addition will almost definitely be from FA.

If you'll forgive me being pedantic I think it's probably similarly likely that it's a trade+develop situation, a la Arrieta. Of course given the timing that means the trade+develop has to be Montgomery or someone who is added before opening day so maybe not exactly likely, but I wouldn't undersell the possibility of trading for a guy and fixing them.

Oh, I agree with that. I do expect a trade or two for pitching. We may be able to pull off a heist and turn a guy into something really good. But I'm just saying we're not emptying out the farm for the Archer types, based on acquisition cost.

Is it just me or is this trade kinda bad for the Marlins?

The Marlins and Reds have reportedly agreed to a trade that will send right-hander Dan Straily from the Cincinnati to Miami in exchange for right-handed pitching prospects Luis Castillo and Austin Brice as well as outfield prospect Isaiah White.

Just Luis Castillo was a steal, let alone the other two. 10/10 times I'll accept a SP prospect who hits 97 and is age appropriate in return for Dan Straily

Brewers sign Neftali Feliz to a 1/5.35 contract. Not a bad move at all, I would've been fine with mostly just signing him for that deal and Holland as our offseason BP additions. Also probably prefer him over Uehara on that deal

In typical Orioles fashion they give Mark Trumbo 3/37.5M rather than going after Joey Bautista because their don't like him.

I'm all about making fun of the Orioles. But HOW is getting a 5 year younger Trumbo, who hit 47 homers AND keeping your 1st Rounder, a worse idea than signing a declining Bautista, at 36 and losing your 1st rounder in the process?

3/37.5 isn't remotely a bad contract.

Josh Johnson retired due to continued arm problems, that sucks. When he was right he was one of the best and I always wanted him as a target for us. horsefeathers pitchers

This. A virtual steal from the O's.

eh, he literally needs to hit 40+ HRs a year to have any ounce of value. It's not a crazy contract that's going to sink them or prevent them from anything but if he's not hitting for league leading type HR power every year he provides no value.

Yeah, signing Joey Bats wouldn't have been some great move, but Trumbo is pretty much just a slab of beef who needs to eat, breathe and horsefeathers dongs to be of any use.

The 1st rounder doesn't matter, because they gave up receiving a 1st rounder by resigning Trumbo. Also, Trumbo has had one good half of baseball in the last 3 years. Giving a DH who has only exceeded an .800OPS two times in the last 6 half seasons nearly 40M seems like the opposite of a good deal. They could have given Chris Carter 1/8 and gotten the same results.

Yeah the smart and prudent move would have been to re-sign Pedro Alvarez to a 1 year deal along with Carter for 1 year (probably for under $20 mil total for the 2) and have them be a platoon DH duo, almost certainly would've given you more production than Trumbo for less money and years.

Just saw that. I wasn't ever a huge believer in his at the level of hype that he had. But there has been a spate of Rockies pitchers leaving coors and doing good things lately. If he's low cost, I'd like to see a flyer on him.

I'd love to take a shot on him, but he's out of options. Seems much more of a fit with a rebuilding team. I'm sure he'll get claimed. I'm not sure if we'd make a trade for a guy that very likely isn't making the squad and that we then have to DFA again.....

All it took on Overton, was the M's 2016 9th round pick. That was a missed opportunity for depth.

This one, I'd love to take a chance with. But I have my doubts this is the type of move this FO makes.

Outfielder and former first round pick Richie Shaffer has now been DFAd/waived for the 5th time this offseason, each time by a different organization (Rays, then Mariners, then Phillies, then Reds, now Indians). Is there some kind of record?

For this offseason, he ties David Rollins in transactions (except that Rollins repeated organizations):

November 18, 2016: Selected off waivers by the Chicago Cubs from the Seattle Mariners.

November 22, 2016: Selected off waivers by the Texas Rangers from the Chicago Cubs.

December 2, 2016: Selected off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Texas Rangers.

December 21, 2016: Selected off waivers by the Texas Rangers from the Philadelphia Phillies.

December 23, 2016: Selected off waivers by the Chicago Cubs from the Texas Rangers.
