This is kind of confusing, does this mean they're trying to swap pitching for pitching, trade for pitching, or trade their pitching?

They are going to be this years D'Backs of last year and Padres of 2 years ago it seems like. They are going after Sale or Archer apparently so it's going to take a lot, I wouldn't mind seeing us getting involved as a 3rd team and sending something like Zagunis/Jeimer/etc. to help finalize it and snag one of the young pitchers being thrown around. Like the Dodgers did last year year with the Fraizer trade with the White Sox/Reds.

I really would be shocked to see them not sign Jansen or Chapman at this point. The Cubs don't have a ton of money committed after this year with Lackey/Montero/Arrietta/Strop coming off the books. We are a big market team that just won the world series.

I really wont believe the White Sox will trade Sale until they do, despite the fact they should have traded him basically at any point in the past few years. I look forward to them trying to reload again and winning 78 games like they always do.

I'm not sure what we could get, but because the asking prices are sooooo high on others, I hope this is explored. We would need to find a SP, even with Monty joining the rotation. But Jake isn't likely going to be a Cub after 2017 and we're a playoff team without him.

I think Seattle make a lot of sense. Their team is filled with older players who are a year or two from decline in Felix,Cano,Cruz,Iwakuma etc. They push the chips all in on a run this year by acquiring Jake. A Felix,Arrieta,Walker,Iwakuma,Karns rotation is real solid.

I wonder if SEA wouldn't consider Arrieta+Zagunis for James Paxton and Edwin Diaz. Paxton has a lot untapped potential and Diaz is the dominant closer this team badly needs. Sign Dex, Cecil and Trade Soler and whoever for the best SP possible and you're looking at

SP:Lester,Hendricks,Lackey,Paxton,Trade

RP:Edwin Diaz,Rondon,Strop,Cecil,Montgomery,Grimm,Edwards

I think the template is perfect. A young SP with major league experience and a nice pen arm. I think Seattle would turn their noses up at that particular deal. In fact, I doubt they'd move either for Jake.....

My guesses at some fits.....

Seattle for Walker straight up? Texas, Boston, Detroit-if they shift and try buying one more time.....Toronto maybe? Angels, if they would move Skaggs maybe? The Yankees could try and beardless Jake would be funny.

The Nats, Giants, and even Dodgers make sense on some level, but I seriously doubt we would deal him to a contender in the NL......

I'll preface this with the thought that there's like a -15% chance of Jake getting traded. But on the chance that I'm wrong you want to trade him:

- to a team with a young SP that has promise but isn't an anchor of the rotation

- to a team planning on contending ASAP and could use another high end SP

- preferably to a team with the financial resources to entertain the thought of extending/re-signing him

- preferably to a team in the AL, partially to avoid enriching the competition but mostly to get the league benefit from the pitcher you have coming back

To me there's one ideal match, and that's the Red Sox and Rodriguez, which further illustrates the impossibility of Arrieta getting traded this offseason.

Theres obviously not a great chance of it, but with the upscale prices of Sale, Quintana, Archer.....I could see Theo jumping the market on something.....

I kind of like Texas, for Martin Perez and a guy like Jurado or Payano....

Martin Perez is garbage.

I'd rather keep Jake and take the pick next year

Perez is worth far more than a comp pick. Jurado and Payano are good gets with a comp pick on their own. I'm not a Perez fan actually. I'm just trying to be realistic on Jakes value. He's certainly not getting multiple years of a front line starter, like Stroman.

Perez is young, has a few seasons of control, throws pretty hard for a lefty, and gets tons of grounders. I get that his K rate sucks, but he's pitching to contact on some level.

We may value Jakes 2017 potential contributions more than a guy like Perez and an upside type arm like Jurado or Payana. And that's perfectly fine. I'm looking around at the top end guys on the market, what its going to take for them.....Figure Theo has enough good will built up to take his shot.....May not mean Perez, but while I agree there's probably a sub 25% shot, the market is set up for Theo to strike early and give one of these teams an early start on everyone else.....

I don't want to get stuck on one guy because that wasn't the point of your original post but Perez shouldn't even be an MLB starter.

Jake's value to this team in 2017 plus the comp pick is far more valuable than what they'd get back in trade if we're talking about players on the level of Martin Perez. I'm not saying you're wrong that Perez is the kind of player he'd bring back, I'm saying he's horsefeathering terrible, and I'd rather have one year of a 4 WAR pitcher, in a championship window, than 4 years of a 1.5-2 WAR pitcher that couldn't strike you or me out.

Who says no first....

Mets get: Votto, Iglesias, Barnhart

Reds get: Dominic Smith, Plawecki, Cecchini, Marcos Molina, and Corey Oswalt

and

Jays get: Jorge Soler, Candelario or Caratini

Cubs get: Sean Reid-Foley, Dalton Pompey, Angel Perdomo

The Mets, because they have no money. But I agree they should be all over a Votto trade. Idk who 2 of the guys are in the Jays trade so can't say.

The Rangers are nearing a deal with free agent righty Andrew Cashner, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). It’s expected to be for a one-year term at $10MM, per MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan (Twitter links).

I had some kind of hope he'd sign with the Cubs and go back to the pen.

I don't know much about those last 2 guys the Reds get or Reid-Foley, but based on their numbers, these seem like pretty fair deals. I think that's about as good as we can expect for Soler. I don't think the Cubs are getting a ML ready starter. I think it's projectable pitching or a reliever if Soler is the main/only piece.

Do any or all of these deals land Trout? Do the Cubs say no to any of these deals.

Trout for Baez, Schwarber, Almora and Soler?

Trout for Schwarber, Eloy, Almora and Soler?

Trout for Baez, Eloy, Cease, Almora and Soler?

I say yes to all of those. I think the Angels at least think about the first 2. Doubt they do about the 3rd. Happ may need to be involved in some scenarios as well. I also think we'd have to include some more pieces in all 3. Zagunis, Jeimer, EJM, Clifton, etc ancillary trade type pieces in a deal of this magnitude.

Could any team really match the Cubs firepower to land Trout in those deals?

Also have Happ available to season deals.

The first deal I might be sour on. I guess we would have to start TLS at 2B and Zobrist in LF.

This is all conjecture but in scenario 1 you sign Fowler as well. Go with Trout/Fowler in LF/CF and move Zobrist to 2B. Also try and get Yunel Escoabr included in the trade as a utility guy. We'd also need to add a Angel Pagan, Gregor Blanco, etc type as a 4th OF option.

Just a quick note on Pompey that I am pretty sure I've mentioned here before...Serious serious makeup issues and not the kind that I like to shrug off because he's young. His dad is a drain on him and already may have cost his son big league playing time.

Mets have ~$80 million committed to next year after running with a totally payroll pushing $180 last year.

Reid-Foley's got a young Lackey thing going, Pedormo looks like a potential power lefty reliever. Both need at least another full season in the minors

Where are you seeing $180M? Opening day payroll was $135M according to Cot's. Loney was free and they added less than $10M with Bruce and Niese.
