are they predicting a strike a 6-man pitching staff

Amongst Japanese pitchers, only Daisuke Matsuzaka has thrown 200 or more IP in his first US season. They're probably assuming some sort of injury or a team protecting him since a) he throws on 5 saysbrest in the NPB and b) didn't pitch much this season due to injury.

Is it a forgone conclusion that he’ll go to the team with the most IFA money to spend (ie Yankees)? If not, how would a deal be structured for a team like the Cubs?

No, he's intentionally coming over now when he'll get a signing bonus of less than 10 million(followed by pre-arb salaries) when he could wait a year and make 9 figures, so money clearly isn't a primary factor. If the Cubs were to sign him, they'd give him the max signing bonus of 300k, and then he'd be a 1st year player just like Happ was this year, making 500k or so and being 6 years from free agency.

What will be the rule for Ohtani regarding arbitration and when he becomes a free agent?

Is he stuck on three years Major League minimum and then three years of arbitration (or whatever the standard is for drafted players) absent an extension? Or could that timing be shortened by signing a one year contract?

On one hand the difference between the Cubs’ $300k and another team’s $3M isn’t much in the grand scheme of baseball money, but if that $3M is the majority of what he’s going to earn for three years, that’s a pretty big number.

Or is he just going to make so much gobsmacking money in endorsements that all of this is arguing about pocket change and pretty much irrelevant?

He's already wealthy from salaries and endorsements from his time in Japan and by all accounts the dude is suspiciously disinterested in money.

Teams buy out young players arbitration years (though they normally get an extra year before free agency when they do that, something I doubt Ohtani will be interested in). I'm sure MLB will be watching for anything fishy so that stuff might be tricky.

He's definitely going to make the bulk of his money on endorsements, both here and in Japan.
