That's not really saying much. The guys currently signed for 2020 + arb guys would be top 3, with a shot at 1 depending on how serious the Yankees and Red Sox are at resetting their tax penalties.

Yeah, it's saying essentially nothing. All he's saying is that we're not outright slashing payroll, which would of course be an incredibly stupid business move when you're launching a new network.

If the Cubs walk away with less than two of Bryant, Betts, Lindor, or Syndergaard over the next three offseasons then finally I may be able to fully quit this whole baseball thing

This would be a massive get. Arguably a more impactful move than any player movement this offseason.

The organization’s player development staff will undergo more changes soon as the Cubs continue to modernize their front office, with sources indicating that Driveline founder and owner Kyle Boddy recently interviewed for an unspecified player development role with the organization.

They were already in the midst of embracing the type of technological advances that Boddy help popularize. While the Cubs have had the new-age technology as long as other organizations, it’s the staff they’ve begun to put together that’s helped them turn the corner.

Edgertronic cameras, Rapsodo devices and KineTrax are all not nearly as useful without the right people around to properly interpret the information they provide. And of course, a Pitch Lab is nothing but theory without results.

If they were to hire Boddy, between he and McLeod in his new role maybe we can see the Cubs take the kind of "risks" the Astros seem to successfully take over and over on pitching. Not to mention down on the farm, all I ask is he help Richard Gallardo become Jose Fernandez 2.0 minus the cacaine

Yeah. I think organizationally they’re improving and fixing a lot of things they had clear issues with or got passed by on, which is encouraging to see them be proactive. Even if they don’t hire Boddy you’d assume they’re going to bring in a guy(s) in a similar mold.

I keep waiting for the inevitable in-game guillotine moment that marks the unofficial end of the season. Something like LaTroy and Dempster leaving the mound covered in diarrhea in 2004 or Game 163 last season or Juan Pierre leading off on Opening Day in 2006. This season has been a painful slog and I just can't see it ending well.

Maybe it happened last night, but I feel like something more dramatic and gut-wrenching is merited.

The only in-game moment I remember from the end of 2004 is losing 2-1 in a game Prior dominated. The rest of mostly just a blur of saying "We just need to go 5-5, there's no way we can miss then."

Maddux’s comment of “This is embarrassing” the day after they were elimated from playoff contention in 2004 is a tough thing to forget.

I've officially gotten to the "I don't care" portion of the season. Haven't had that feeling since 2013. It's been a *fast and good six years.

that was the moment for me

and perfectly enough, it's starting to feel like 2-1 reds on wednesday night because the 2004 moment was also against the reds

Victor Diaz

(haha, that game was also a Prior gem 7.2 IP, 4H, 2BB, 0R... late 2004 Prior was unreal considering what came before and after it)

Oof. Today made Brant Brown wince. At least the Cubs aren’t the Pirates.

Brant Brown and Mark Prior are too busy winning the Dodgers to focus on the past, unlike us.

Don't know if you still read the forum anymore, Bruce, but thanks for all the years covering the team. You've been my favorite beat writer for a long time. I hope that semi-retirement treats you well!
