Watching the Cubs this year reminds me of watching all those great Braves teams of the 90s. Every game you expect to see a win. The obvious difference is great hitting vs. great pitching (although the pitching has been the star thus far)

I think you're on to something.

Bryant plays Chipper, Rizzo is a combination of McGriff and Gallaraga, Schwarber is an easy Klesko... Heyward can be Justice, Dex is Marquise Grissom. Soler ... Ron Gant? Sczuzur is Deion Sanders, of course. Contreras will be Javy Lopez soon enough. Jake is Maddux, Lester is Glavine, Lackey can be Old Smoltz (still good). And then I guess Russell and Baez are like two Furcals? I've obviously taken this too far. Point is, I think we're better that those teams full of Hall of Famers.

remember when kyle was so butthurt about our young talent because the cardinals (or was it the pirates?) were set up to be just as good

Thankfully the Pirates got dumb and less thankfully from a human perspective the Cardinals had something awful happen and then they got dumb and super thankfully Epstein really was just waiting a couple of years to go full 2000s Boston on all of them.

yeah who could have foreseen epstein was a genius. if only there was some indication that he wasn't just out [expletive] around with PTR's money

How have the Pirates been dumb? They still have most of the same young core but dont have the money to spend around it & a little more of their core based around pitching.

I think they are dumb in the sense they've never gone "all in." Ie didn't spend once on a big FA or give up the farm for a piece.

It depends on their goal. If they want a 12.5% chance of winning instead of a 6.25% chance of winning in any given year, it would have made sense for them to make a move in the past three years to get out of the wildcard spot. If they want to be in a position to continue having a good shot at the playoffs going forward, they can't afford to burn their resources like that in a "win now" effort.

What are you talking about, they made a blockbuster late season trade for baseball superstar Aramis Ramirez last year (lol)

Making fun of the Pirates is fun to be sure, but I think on a dollar to dollar basis, no one is better at squeezing the most out of their rag as the Pirates. Which I respect, as the Cards would pretend they are the best at it...and still do, anyhow. Whatever.

Hey, let's not start saying things we can't take back.

Apparently the Cubs have a no-hitter protocol and they discussed it with all the starters before the season: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/37824/cubs-pitching-coach-chris-bosio-predicts-more-no-hitters-as-cubs-follow-their-protocol

Did you catch that comment where Wittmeyer referred to the Cubs' front office as "overvalued?"

Strange, no?

Coming from Gordo? Not surprising at all. He's such a douchnozzle.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-cubs-are-the-best-base-running-team-too/

This is ostensibly about how we are the best base-running team in the league. But, it really encapsulates the essence of this team. It touches on how we have an awesome offense, awesome pitching, and awesome defense, too. It talks about how we are making considerably more contact this year. It talks about how the young guys are striking out less. It talks about how Zobrist and Heyward have influenced our offense. It shows why the Jason Heyward signing was so damn awesome, because he is such a great all-around player, picking up value all over the field. Essentially it is the recorded testimony of everything great that we've seen.

For whatever reason, I couldn't get search to work on my phone, so my apologies if this has been covered: can someone explain the 3am nickname to me?

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Cubs are 11 games over .500

They weren't 11 over .500 until August 6th last year

And their end of season run differential was +81

We currently having 16 players playing at least at a 3-win pace, according to fWAR.

....how many players in the league are currently playing at a 3-win pace? I really want us to have like 20-25% of them.
