I'll always take the other side when Barstool is involved.  That said, Dan has turned into a crotchety old man.  I miss the old Boers and Bernstein version of Dan, though admittedly a lot of the humor from that show would never fly today.  That edge he and Boers had back then though was entertaining.

Barstool had one of their guys fill in for the afternoon show on 670 now that Parkins is gone to FS1 TV. In show transition, Eddie from Barstool called Dan by just “Bernstein” and Dan said “you don’t know me like that.” It was tough to gauge intent since Eddie from Barstool was off site on a remote with Spiegel, but clearly Dan doesn’t like Barstool. Portnoy and Big Cat and the rest of the Barstool minions weren’t happy. They said Dan used to be cool and like them, but now is just a crotchety old man and part of legacy media that is dying.

Calling him by his last name is too familiar? Weird

Yes, its generally thought of as rude by human beings in America to call somebody by their last name only when you aren’t friends.

if you are introduced to somebody named Tom Smith and then said “smith, what are you up to” they’d look at you sideways. It’s not weird, it’s basic human interaction.

it’s a condescending tone a boss or coach would take with an underling. And really poor form with an elder.

Yeah, someone calling me by my last name would feel like a high school coach was talking to me. It's not insulting, just kind of weird in a normal social situation.

This is that implied hierarchy stuff that I 100% admit I have a blindspot for.  I'm sure I'm the one who is wrong, I'm just surprised.

If i was just introduced to someone and literally the next thing I said to them needed a direct address, I'd probably use "Mr. Smith" or "sir."

But the whole point of last names is that they're less familiar than first names.  I would have expected that kind of reaction from calling him "Dan."  I would not have expected it for calilng him by his last name, which is literally what he goes by in the title of the show (I assume he still does anyway, I haven't listened to it since it was Boehs and Bernstein many years ago).

Semi-related, I hate when people on message boards call athletes or celebrities by their first name. It feels weirdly too familiar. You're not their friend, call them by their last name.

I find myself mixing and matching even in the same sentence (E.g, Dansby, Nico, Belli, and Happ) and I can’t offer a rhyme or reason.

Mr. last name is completely fine. I'm getting the impression they're just saying last name and that's it. Like if someone came up to a person and just said "hey Smith", That's weird, but if they're saying Hi Mr. Smith that's completely normal.

Yeah. When talking ABOUT people it’s completely different and you basically use the easiest, most clarifying and/or most fun version of the name to say.

Barstool Big Cat essentially said the same thing. The Show is called “Bernstein and Holmes,” so why not call him by that name. I didn’t think Barstool Eddie was trying to be condescending. He probably shouldn’t have called him “Bernstein” never having met him, but Dan overreacted and then Portnoy further overreacted by saying he wanted to ruin Dan’s career forever.

It's too bad that Bernstein turned into the old man that Boers always made fun of. I really liked him back in the late 90's/early 2000's. He even read a few of my "Who ya Crappin?"'s on air

The whole Bernstein/Barstool thing is stupid on both sides.

I get a little bit of where Bernstein is coming from.  It is somewhat odd to refer to someone by their last name in that context.  Would the guy have referred to Laurence Holmes as Holmes or Dan Patrick as Patrick?

At the same time, his last name is the title of the show and I didn't hear any malicious intent in the way it was used.  Clearly there is more to this than just the last name thing, but Bernstein's reaction was way over the top.  Instead of politely correcting the guy (if he really thought it needed it), he had to sit there and fume/pout on camera.

Now you have Barstool (who I know absolutely nothing about) making a huge deal out of this because they didn't like the way a host reacted to their guy.  This includes calling Bernstein a "woke lunatic" and suggesting their followers continue to harass him.  Somehow I feel like if they were on the other side of this, they would be calling out the evils of cancel culture.

Maybe this is all some WWE Attitude era style angle where Bernstein vs. Barstool draws huge ratings for both of them.  Ok, we all know that isn't the case.  It's just dumb.

IMO, Dan was pissed that someone from Barstool was on his station because they are a collection of douchebags. He should have made that his argument instead of finding a pretext.

I'd be pissed at management, but probably would not make an issue on the air.

This is exactly it.  He can't stand Portnoy and their whole schtick and made a big deal out of nothing because he had an axe to grind going in.  Completely dumb on his part but the stoolies making this big of a deal about it is even worse.

This is actually pretty awesome.

CHSN has struck a deal with a small, independent Chicago TV station to broadcast its 300-plus game schedule and associated sports shows, making the nascent network free to anyone who can capture the over-the-air signal.

It has also been confirmed elsehwere that both subchannels (62.2 and 62.3) will be broadcast in HD.  Your move Marquee!

Hoping they come to a deal with YouTube TV, don't want to go buy an antenna

This might be the push I need to drop YTTV and go with just an antenna and the ondemand apps

I purposely got You Tube TV a month ago and ditched DirecTV. The reason I went with YTTV is because of the Bulls and Hawks. I don't regret it, provided they offer a stream of some sort at some point. I'm not going to buy an antenna. If they can come to a deal with You Tube, then all the better. Without the Bulls and Blackhawks, NBCS Chicago is worthless to me.
