It's hard for me to imagine Payton being a huge financial savings over Mully.  Maybe there is a bit there, but enough to really make a significant difference in the books? If that truly is the motiviation, it might show the station is in more trouble than we know of.

I’ve heard Mully made the most on the station

Mully was getting old and was a little stale. I think the morning show started losing the ratings to 1000 after dominating forever and Mitch Rosen felt a change needed to occur.
