The Score, the longtime Chicago sports radio leader which launched as a daytime-only AM station more than three decades ago, is adding an FM simulcast.

The full schedule of WSCR-AM 670, including Cubs and Bulls play-by-play, along with a roster of sports talk hosts such as “Mully & Haugh,” will air on co-owned 104.3 FM beginning Feb. 2., group station owner Audacy announced Wednesday.

This makes sense with AM tuners being phased out entirely in many newer vehicles.  They already have an HD Radio channel, but that is basically only accessible within the city.

Wait, what is the point of getting rid of AM tuners?

Many electric vehicles can't get decent AM reception due to interference so they started leaving AM radio out entirely.

There are few if any am stations left

back in the day, however, there were AM STEREO stations. Only used in the Outback and parts of greater Asia anymore; am travels farther than FM

what a time to be alive.

Am radio has been a dieing market for decades. Ok, I exaggerate its demise, but not really it’s kinda dead

Look, I have no idea the last time I listened to an AM channel, but a quick glance at the radio stations available here there's at least 2 dozen AM stations in my area, so SOMEONE is listening to it.

Like, you just jumped in to the middle of people mourning the death of a host from Chicago's biggest sports station.

B&B was a great show. Terry will be missed. No funeral for him which is unusual.

Terry probably wanted it that way. Who you crappin at 5pm on Thursdays was must listen to radio.  I would work late on Thursdays so I could catch it in my car

Many of the AM stations were bought by religious groups and small operators doing niche programming like all Spanish (outside of big metropolitan areas). It’s very much alive, just for different demographics.

I will go so far as to say that when the history of the latter part of the 20th century is written, if history as we know it still exists, AM radio will be featured prominently as one of the mechanisms used to fundamentally change our culture.

Speaking of, there are so many damn Christian stations on FM now in the Chicagoland area.  92.5, 94.3, 97.9, 103.9, etc. etc.

Because fm stations have a shorter range than am.

Yeah, the AM signal gets to me down in Bloomington.  FM...no chance.
