Jose Abreu is the next "answer", right? Or was it "Garrett Cooper 2.0" ?

Didn't think so.

You can make a case he is the best home run hitter of all time, and there's a chance he might not make it to 500. His 162 game average is 50 homeruns and he has a 7.2 HR%, which is identical with 93-04 Bonds. His first full season at 25, COVID, and injuries desperately hurt his counting stats.

I don't know that I've ever seen splits as absurdly different than what Jeff McNeil has this year

He's a borderline Allstar away from Citi Field and a guy who should be DFA'd immediately at home.

It's amazing that basically every single big Baltimore bat prospect of the most recent rebuild has not only been a success so far, but an all star level player.

Gunnar Henderson leads all of MLB with 6.0 fWAR through 83 games. just your casual 11.7 fWAR/162 game pace.

Adley Rutschman is at 2.9 fWAR through 79 games 5.95 fWAR/162 pace

Jordan Westburg is at 2.7 fWAR through 77 games 5.68 fWAR/162 pace

Colton Cowser is at 2.2 fWAR through 80 games 4.46 fWAR/162 pace

Joey Ortiz, who was traded to Milwaukee, is at 2.6fWAR through 72 games 5.85 fWAR/162 pace

Freshly promoted Heston Kjerstad is putting up a 181 wRC+ in his first 37 PA as well.

Then they still have Mayo, Holliday and Basallo to go. We could be looking at the best offensive line up in modern history.

How ‘bout some mad props for former Cubs coach Brandon Hyde.  Things started off really shaky in Baltimore as the Orioles lost 108 games in his first season as manager.  After the abbreviated Covid season, his team lost 110 games in 2021.  But he fianally righted the ship with 83 wins in ‘02 and the over 100 wins last year. And they’re on pace again for 100+ this year.

Kudos to you, Mr. Hyde!!!

Alternatively they might all be as good right now as they will ever be. It's not like we Cubs fans don't have firsthand knowledge of that possibility.

This is not quite the Gregory Polanco debacle against the Cubs but boy is it closer than I ever thought I'd see again

Tigers won't move him, but ughh if the Dodgers do somehow pull it off...

Baltimore is in on him too. If I were a Tiger's fan I would be so pissed if they traded him.

So what happened to Atlanta's offense this year?

Sean Murphy went from .844 to .631
Matt Olson went from .993 to .699
Ozzie Albies went from .849 to .711
Orlando Arcia went from .741 to .577
Austin Riley went from .861 to .795
Michael Harris went from .808 to .653
Ronald Acuna went from 1.012 to .716

About the only guy doing better is Ozuna and he's only 67 points higher. It's not like it's an aging team either where you'd expect regression. Of those 7 guys, only Olson is age 30 or up and he's exactly 30.

Last year Atlanta had a really big outlier in HR/FB, it was 19.1% and no team since the pandemic had cleared 16%.  That was probably bound to regress and then you have the ball or whatever is suppressing offense this year probably impacting them further if they're that reliant on HR for offense.  Acuna getting hurt doesn't help either, and I'm guessing there's some feedback loop effects where they benefitted from everyone hitting well simultaneously so the broken chain brings everyone down a bit(hitting with men on base less often, etc).

I tend to think of baseball as a game of individual accomplishment, but I do believe there is a level of synergy that gets unlocked when a lineup has no holes.  When pitchers have nowhere to hide fewer rallies fizzle out and even if a pitcher keeps runs off the board you grind him into dust.

On top of that, when you have a team that's dominating the offense gets a bit of a superficial lift because they are much more likely to see the 7th or 8th guy in the bullpen pecking order than the 1st or 2nd.

So I think the injuries plus Acuna no longer playing on god mode even when he was on the field put the other guys in less favorable spots.  They're out of the bubble now and there's no more ordering off the menu and complementary app samplers out in the real world.
