So out are Dexter Fowler, Starlin Castro, Fernando Rodney, and Jonathan Herrerra. Possibly Jorge Soler in the near future.

In are John Lackey, Ben Zobrist, Adam Warren, Rex Brothers, and Brendan Ryan.

I feel as though there's a trend here, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Getting gritty

That's probably why we backed out of the Heyward talks at the last second.

Are we now thinking Javy and Soler stick around? I'm fine with the pitching depth now.

i kinda thought it was weird when maddon made those really positive comments about javy and soler specifically today (when asked - though it's obviously not crazy for teams to talk guys up when trade talks are going on)...now i think he knew the wheels were in motion on this.

right this second, i'm inclined to think both are here next year.

Can't help but feel bad for Castro. Endured all those shitty years and gets traded on the cusp of a dominant run. At least it wasn't to a non-contender.

You're wrong the wheels weren't in motion - they had already stopped

Makes sense. Jesse was saying the Cubs would likely have a deal last night and when called out this afternoon he said give it 6 hours

Fun is outlawed on the Yankees.

seriously, though. it's new york and he's on the yankees is what i'm saying.

if he's bad, though, it won't be fun.

I say he makes them forget about Jeter.

THAT'S RIGHT.

I don't doubt we're a better team now, but I'm pretty sad about this. Starlin was the only thing worth watching for what seemed like a long time until Rizzo came here. I thought he figured everything out during the 2014 season was going to turn into what we had all hoped for. Sigh. As David said, at least it's the Yankees; he's not going to Cleveland or Tampa to play in front of 7,000 people.

Yeah, I'm bummed. For better or worse, Castro made me feel like I was rooting for more than just laundry. He was always a Cub. I desperately wanted to see him win it all here. Still, I'm handling it better than my 5 -year-old who, through the sobbing, demanded I call Theo and insist that he get Starlin back right now. God help me he'll go Linda Blair if they trade Baez.

like half our team and most of our important position players have always been cubs (at least in the majors - and with rizzo has been like 99.999999% of his time), so you're in good shape there. ;)

It's a good deal for the Yankees, as they take a gamble on a guy who was essentially their swing man, and they have some chips to play to try and get an additional starter. I think Kevin Long's a pretty good hitting coach, so will be curious what work he can do with Castro. If Castro takes off, this is a heck of a trade for them. If not, it's a nice little gamble, and he shores up the question of who plays 2nd for them for the near future (Refsnyder/Ackley/Pirela).

For us, it makes sense. I don't have huge expectations for Warren, other than that he adds needed depth for us. Warren will probably be given every shot to win a 4th/5th starter job in the spring, and failing that, would move to the pen if necessary. They clear money to add Zobrist, a better fit for the current window, without sacrificing, as of now, the overall future at 2nd (Baez, Torres, Happ, whoever takes the ball and runs with it). Now, there's no pressing urgency to add a starter, and they can take their time sorting through the CF options and/or see if this Baez in CF idea can happen.

I tend to think they will end up at least adding one more SP option somehow, even if weak (maybe a change of scenes type like Ross Detwiler or someone of that ilk), and go after a CF, but now they aren't at the whims of the market.

Going to be interesting to look back in the future and see how this one plays out.

Adding some fire to the roster, these are guys who give their all and bring a cerebral element to their craft.

I'm going to vomit.
