I seriously have no idea how anybody can look at Jason Hammel and think "unacceptable 5th starter"

and lots of people are doing it...even otherwise reasonably sane people.

I'd be more worried if we didn't have guys like Cahill and Warren and possibly Wood to step in if he falters. Part of me still believes that a chunk of the reason Hammel was so ineffective was due to his hammy injury. After that point, he was never the same, took a long time getting warmed up in games, and rarely was extended past the 5th inning even when pitching relatively well. So I hold out hope that he comes into camp healthy and surprises people.

I think Warren will be in the rotation at the start of the season.

Agreed. Hammel is probably getting traded to free up a few dollars more for Heyward.

Then we still need more pitching depth.

Which is easy to achieve with all of the talent they still have to trade from.

You really have to distrust Hammel for that to make sense to me

It's not a distrust of Hammel. It's making his price tag go away for someone who can provide nearly equal production at a much lesser cost and then using Hammel's money to spend on Heyward.

If they can afford to keep Hammel and sign Heyward, then ignore my jibberish.

You can save nearly as much money by trading Wood and not open a hole back up in the rotation.

With Wood, Cahill, and Richard, we'd have no shortage of back end/emergency depth. And nobody ever toe-tagged the Baez/Rays talks. Maybe Teheran, depending on how dedicated the Braves are to their rebuild. And there's always the option of dumpster diving. Brandon Beachy would be an interesting Bosio project.

So you'd so much rather trade Hammel than Wood that you're willing to also give up Baez to make it happen?

i think that's what a Hammel trade would look like; think of how much sense an Aaron Blair - Hammel swap would have made, assuming, you know, sanity had prevailed

likewise, the Cardinals have a 400+ IP hole to fill- when the alternatives are throwing 9(!) figures at Chen or Leake, maybe giving up Luke Weaver or Marco Gonzales for the same kind of pitcher, only due 2 years and $18M starts to look pretty desirable (this is more a basic example that admittedly ignores the obvious hurdles in StL/CHC dealings)

Was it you or someone else who called me crazy for suggesting such a trade a while back? I thought it was you telling me I had a warped sense of Hammel's value if I thought he could get back a MLB-ready pitcher.

i want to say it might've been SSR? or maybe it was you expecting something like Jose DeLeon in return

but it's hard to be sure; i'd been touting Mike Leake as a nice "breakout" option, assuming 4/60 or 5/75, i think...if he and/or Chen are due nine figures in this market then like i said above, that makes Hammel look a whole lot better as a trade chip

I think it may be an indictment of your qualifications to accurately determine this...

Ah, thanks. If the Cubs can get back a sufficiently qualified mlb-ready arm to serve as depth in return for Hammel, then I kinda hope they trade him. Even if they don't need that money for Heyward, then spend it on Cubans or a flier on Cliff Lee or a short inning reliever or whatever.

cerebrally, i'm pretty good with this trade. emotionally... it's complicated. he just had that "kid at heart" thing going on that made him endearing and even when he was not good, there was always a strong instinct to pull for him and hope for the best. that probably won't ever go away

i was trying to think of my favorite moment of his from this past season. there's some good ones, but i keep coming back to one that perfectly represents his insuppressible goofiness with his penchant for the dramatic; that game against pittsburg in april when he got something in his eye, froze the pitcher, made some hilarious facial gestures, stepped back in the box, and won the game with a walk-off hit. that [expletive] was so hilarious and awesome and i just don't think any player before or after could dose out that combination of emotions so naturally and effortlessly

Wasn't that actually in Pittsburgh? I remember it not being one of his walkoffs, but it was the go-ahead RBI he drove in they they ended up winning off of.

Either way, it was great.

Yah. It was in Pittsburgh. Pretty sure it was the same series he almost killed that lady but maybe not since we went there a million times early.
