Sources: #Cubs talking to #Yankees about trade that would send Starlin Castro to NYY, sources tell me and @jonmorosi.

This would tie into Zobrist.

I really don't want Gardner for him. I still really like Castro, I guess this could be a salary dump to get Zobrist. Any intriguing cheapish guys they have? Edited by Cubswin11

this is JUST great. now he's mentally shattered for 2016 anyway so might as well ship him off.

but seriously i have no interest in Gardner - just bring back Dex if those two are your choices. and keep starlin.

Unless we've already been told by Heyward that we're not getting him- I seriously doubt we're trading for Gardner. Thuis smells like saving salary all day long.

and as much as I know it's a possibility, I would really hate to see Starlin go. I'd rather send off Baez, but part of me knows that Javy's ceiling is so much higher that I could understand the sentiment of keeping him in lieu of castro. it's just an irrational cubs side of me that has rooted for him longer than any other current cub.

Just to give more of it right back to a guy like a decade older?

How untouchable is Severino/how much more would we have to add? Going off of trying to get young controllable guys narrative as well. Like could we do Castro, Hammel salary dump with McKinney or one of the top 5-8 guys for him? Edited by Cubswin11

Am I missing the part where we need to jump into the Zobrist bidding war?

Don't get me wrong, he had a wildly productive run from 2009-2014, but his offensive production dropped last year (at least in terms of WAR). He will be 35 in May and expected to play important defensive positions.

I could be on board with a reasonable contract, but ~16 mil per for a guys age 35-39 seasons seems insane.

Furthermore trading Castro, an inconsistent but mostly productive SS on a reasonable contract in order to make room for him seems strange.

Please sell me on why I'm dumb and this makes sense

I actually like him. Did that come off as me thinking he sucks? If so, I'm not in that camp at all. But I do fall in line that he's not got a bunch of trade value either. If he was on the open market right now, I doubt he'd get much more than what's owed him currently(4/38). And I could see a scenario where they'd dump him(I mean, they'll get something useful back) in order to move quickly on Zobrist.

Yeah, but a guy who IS better than him and a guy that Maddon certainly loves. Again, I'm not a Starlin hater, I could just see them trying to get Zobrist.

Trading Castro to sign anyone other than Heyward is dumb at this point. To sign Zobrist is a complete head-scratcher.

Supposedly they wouldn't include Severino in talks for Fernandez. We're not getting him for Castro.

No idea on what they could send back that would make sense.

I don't think this would be something that takes them off Heyward. I think it's just them trying to upgrade 2B.

At a cost of $9M in payroll

Not necessarily. It'd all be dependent on how Zobrist's contract is structured.

Just matching up rumors here...

The Yankees have been rumored to be trying to find a taker for Ivan Nova. I wonder if that is a swap the Cubs would make here.

(to be clear, this would not excite me at all)
