Maddon on Soler: I didn't realize he was that big"

Joe Maddon: "I like how Miguel Montero speaks. He uses adverbs. Not many guys use adverbs."

Maddon says he likes Miguel Montero because he uses a lot of adverbs, incluing the "ly" at the end. "He's an 'ly' guy," Joe said. #Cubs

Joe Maddon says Tsuyoshi Wada has a lower-body issue. "I'm going hockey. I love hockey." #Cubs

Can some explain to me what the Wada thing means?

He has some kind of (hopefully) minor injury that they aren't specifying that is presumably keeping him out of workout (or else nobody would have asked about him).

Thank you.

In the NHL, teams don't have to specify the injury. If a player has a sprained knee, the team only has to report it's a "lower body injury."

Edit: changed "injury" from "issue."

Maddon-isms: Already, Maddon has entertained in just a few days of meeting the media. Here are a few of his better quotes from the first weekend of spring training.

“I use the term ‘force multiplier.’ The people in the group that make them better. He absolutely fits into that category. –- on reliever Jason Motte, from theories taken from a Colin Powell book.

“A good backup quarterback is very, very important. It’s magnified with him. He’s just a different cat.” –- on backup catcher David Ross

“I’m still learning names and numbers and hairstyles. We have some great hair on this team. We have really good hair.”

“He uses adverbs when he speaks. Not many people use adverbs all the time. He’s really an interesting cat. Physically he’s not imposing but he’s a baseball player.” –- on catcher Miguel Montero

"I do not like baseball playoffs starting and I'm in the backyard cooking steaks.”

"I don’t know if I've met a more sincere player. He's all about winning. Period.” –- on Jon Lester

“I wish I could grow one. If I could grow a beard I’d grow a beard. I’m very bad at facial hair.” –- on allowing facial hair for his players.

Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant has been asked to work out in the outfield during spring training.

The idea was presented to Bryant by manager Joe Maddon in their first meeting on Monday, though there have always been whispers that he could give the outfield a shot. "I had my first meeting with Kris today," Maddon said. "He was very impressive and very mature for a kid of 23. He understands what he is doing really well. He is accepting of working in the outfield, very excepting of that." Bryant will still technically compete for the Opening Day third base job, but the Cubs plan to keep him at Triple-A Iowa for at least 21 days in order to gain an extra year of control. The top prospect could be promoted as soon as late April/early May and will take over either at third base or left field.

Well that was...completely expected.

It certainly would have made more sense before we traded Valbuena. But obviously if the plan for the future is Bryant in LF, Baez at 3B, Russell at SS, Castro at 3B or something like that, then its good to get him prepared for that. Just not sure who plays 3B this year assuming Russell isn't coming up until September at the earliest.

If the long-term plan is Baez at 3B, they should start working him out there right away. I've always liked that idea anyway, with Baez's stocky frame and strong arm he could be a perfect fit there. La Stella and Alcantara can play second (their natural position) until Russell is ready, at which point Castro slides over to 2B and Addison becomes the shortstop. Maybe this time next year the projected lineup looks like:

SS Addison Russell

2B Starlin Castro

1B Anthony Rizzo

LF Kris Bryant

RF Jorge Soler

3B Javier Baez

C Miguel Montero (Kyle Schwarber eventually)

CF Arismendy Alcantara (Albert Almora eventually)

This news just surprises me because I thought their intentions were to keep Bryant at the hot corner as long as possible to maximize his value, and supposedly his defense wasn't half bad over there either.

I fully expect them to give him a chance to stick at 3B once he comes up, part of this is just giving them reasons not to have him break camp since they can't come out and explicitly say the only reason he's starting in AAA is to get the extra year of control. Also it's ST so they might as well do some due diligence to see how he looks in the OF.

I think you might be reading the article wrong. To me, it reads that they want him to log some time in the outfield, not to make the switch to the outfield. If he is moved to the outfield at some point, they will want him to have spent more time there than he currently has. It makes sense to do this, and I'm sure they still hope that he can stick at 3rd.

I still think Russell at 3rd makes the most sense and that he can go all Machado (defensively) over there. Plus you can let him beef up a bit like he did in high school and hopefully maximize his power potential even more. It's not like Javy's a bad option at 3rd, but I think he fits best at 2nd where he can still use his range but cut down on the erratic throws. Definitely a bit of wasted arm strength with him at 2nd, but you're going to have to make a bit of a sacrifice with whomever you put there.
