currently the 6th best winning percentage in baseball.

i sure wish we didn't have to play in the same division as the stupid cardinals

or the same planet

Can we convince their fans that there was a baseball league discovered on Mars and their team and fans need to travel there as ambassadors of Earth baseball being BFIB and all?

It will make their miserable tears of sadness that much more enjoyable when we stomp them into oblivion. Which I won't say a word about until after the last out of a series against them.

I don't even want to proclaim this the best moment of the season so far, because heck they're still ascending.

But I feel very positive about this sweep of the Giants

How many of the guys on the 25 man roster are getting hammered and laid tonight?

Not only should we revert to megathreads, but there should only be one megathread, and this is it, for the entire board.

It's insanely rare to have a series of this impact on your playoff odds outside of the last week of the year. Four game sweep against the team that is the closest to keeping you out of the playoffs, and they stayed in that spot despite you beating them all four times. Magic number is now 49.

What's crazy about this team right now is that they're still not hitting on all cylinders. They've won 10 of 11 in a stretch when they've benched their former All-Star SS, the bullpen is shaky, the 5th starter job looks anything but settled and Bryant is scuffling. There is so much talent on this team that they can absorb problems that would hurt most teams this young. A key to me is one of Bryant or Soler driving in runs and picking up Rizzo. If only Bryant got hot to go along with Russell, Fowler, Schwarber, Soler and Rizzo...holy crap. We're talking mid 90's Indians offense.

Pitchers are fickle is working out in our favor for once. Our top 4 starting pitchers are all having good to great years (even by Lester's established standards) and have only missed one start between them.

True, but the SP has been there almost all season, 1-4 anyway. The difference now is that they're winning the 8-6,5-4 games. Obviously they are playing well, but I wouldn't say the're playing at a peak level yet.

This may have been posted in the game thread already, but this quote from Arrieta after the game is pure badass:

"Win the first three with a chance to sweep, I was in the mindset of coming out to dominate today and put us in the situation where we only needed one or two (runs)," Arrieta said.

Posted in the game thread but Fangraphs had our playoff odds at 56.3 percent after Wednesday. They're now at 80.6.

Bryant isn't scuffling anymore. He's been great so far this month.

I'd add that the pen is far from shaky. The Giants have a very good offense. They're 7th in runs, 6th in OPS overall and 6th in wOBA. However, those numbers are brought down by ATT Park. They're first in each of those categories on the road this year.

Arguably the best stretch for this franchise since the end of the 03' regular season (weekend sweep of Pitt, including a double-header).

4 game sweep of Milwaukee was probably just a shade better, since it was for the division. But it's close, and if someone wants to say this is better because it's the first big move by this particular group and it's been so long, I have no argument.

I thought about making the argument... but that helped secure a certain playoff seed (I'm not sure but I don't think the 08 team was in much danger of missing the playoffs altogether at that point).

This one was pretty big in terms of their hopes of securing a berth at all, which is bigger.

I can't even remember the year, but there was a big 5 game set in wrigley against the Cardinals where the Cubs took 4 of 5 that I remember as amazing. I think this included an inning with 10 consecutive hits by the Cubs, though I may be mixing memories. I have googled myself silly trying to find these games. Can anyone help?

Edit: the five game series was over Labor Day weekend 2003.

It's ERA, so take it for what it's worth, but all five Cubs staters are in the top fifty in ERA in mlb.

2003.

That was the defining series of that home stretch run.
