Nice, I like Denorfia quite a bit. With the bat he's very much in the Ruggiano mold of overall production, trading some power and Ks for extra singles. Defensively he appears to be a good bit better, rating well above average in the corners. He doesn't grade out so well in CF, but with only 110 games worth of innings there I wonder if that's partially a sample size issue. 3x as many innings at the corners has him a +13 defensively, hard to believe -11 is his true talent level in CF. If that is the case, he's a nice Alcantara fallback/platoon guy as well, which is especially important if Bryant is to be an OF at all.

Now go get someone like Parra or Venable and trade off some of the excess roster spots you don't need(Coghlan, Sweeney, at least one of Jaxon/Wood), and things will be in good shape.

Denorfia has quietly crushed Lefties in his career, that is the good news. The bad news is that he was pretty bad against them last year. He can play all OF positions, but I would assume most of his time will be in a platoon with Coghlan in left.

I like he plays all 3 spots. Perhaps as CF in Wrigley instead of Petco he'll look a little better as a CF too.

Probably a slightly better version of Ruggiano when you factor in the versatility and defense and they got a little something back for Ruggiano, so I guess it's a small net win. As has been said, I just hope this isn't the last upgrade to the OF.

at 34 I'm not expecting an uptick in CF defense.

As long as the total overall package is better than whoever our backup CF is now (Lake? Sweeney?)

I've long liked Denorfia and it's a cheap deal, but how is he different from Sweeney and Coghlan? Surely one of those two is getting dealt or cut, right?

Sweeney maybe, but I'd think Coghlan/Denorfia is our platoon in LF.

Out of curiosity but is there any legit info that suggests the Cubs are actually considering playing Bryant in LF next year or is it all speculation from fans because it makes too much sense? I might have missed/forgot something.

Outside of Theo and McLeod both publicly talking up his ability to play OF (and the fact that he played it in college) semi-recently, Kaplan's report a few months ago that he'd be getting work in the OF in the spring/early season at Iowa, not really.

To add to the "makes too much sense" part, barring a big trade (less "big" when it comes to Valbuena, of course), they have Baez, Castro, Valbuena, and Russell who all need to play a lot either now or pretty soon and they have at least one major OF opening.

Free-agent outfielder Chris Denorfia has signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Cubs on Wednesday, adding another veteran to the mix. Barring another acquisition, Denorfia is likely to platoon in left field with left-handed hitting Chris Coghlan. He has a .292 career average against left-handers with a .358 OBP, while Coghlan has a .382 career average vs. right-handers with a .346 OBP.

Looks like Sully started hitting the New Years juice and/or pipe a little on the early side.
