Meyer has taken the best coach in college away from Saban. I'm so impressed with OSU.

Mariota: 3rd round at best?

I still say if he drops out of the top 10, somebody is getting a steal. I don't think they will, but I want the Titans grabbing him at 2 if he doesn't go to Tampa.

i like Mariota as Josh Freeman without the drugs or whatever

Physically I can see the comparison (though Freeman is bigger than Mariota). Mariota has been far more productive, though, and profiles as a much better NFL prospect.

Freeman threw 15, 11 and 8 INTs in his 3 seasons in college, Mariota has thrown 13 total in 3 years and in more attempts. Freeman also topped 60% completions once in three years, while Mariota's lowest (63.5) is higher than Freeman's best (63.3). Freeman was at 51.9% his freshman year - that's abysmal.

I realize there are system differences and whatnot, but the numbers are so strikingly different it's impossible to just overlook them and try to compare the two as passers, in my opinion.

I'm just not seeing the exceptional NFL skills to justify a 1st round pick.

Great college player he is. Not seeing it at the next level.

This. And I thought this well before this game. Most of his throws are to wide open receivers (that he often doesn't even hit in stride) or quick passes to receivers who get the ball in space and pick up YAC. He's just not a very good NFL QB prospect from what I've seen.

To be fair I've probably only watched about 5 or 6 of his games. But I highly doubt he ever becomes a franchise quarterback.

Frustrating to watch a Ducks game and them not be in rhythm and not get the ball in the 3rd Q.

For those who think Mariota is not the best QB or a NFL prospect, that is laughable. He will be as good as Russell Wilson in year one and will be to Tennessee as Luck is to Indy and lead to wild card next year.

The comment about hitting open receivers is so ridiculously wrong and proof that you haven't seen any other Duck games other than the playoffs. Go watch Utah tape or UW tape.

Cardale Jones only has two days to decide if he's declaring for the draft (underclassmen deadline is 1/15). Not sure if that's enough time for him to get enough feedback to make the leap

Well, maybe you are right but remember Wilson was a 3rd round pick and is considered to be somewhat a surprise success.

I think I'd pick Mariota at roughly the same level and put him in a development role the first year even though Wilson started right away.

I'd be surprised if you don't at least admit Mariota worked with a supporting cast of skill players several levels above Wilson.

He'd get drafted in the middle rounds for sure. He seems like a guy that would kill it at the combine too.

With all of this. He just misses a ton of the tough, pro-style throws IMO.

Wilson fell almost exclusively because he's 5'11 or shorter. Nobody questioned his ability, it was his height that scared people. Mariota doesn't have that negative - while I'm not sure it's accurate, he's listed at 6'4.

I've seen him miss some, but he hits a lot of them too. Whether or not he can actually hit the pro-style throws in the NFL consistently will only be answered once he makes the pros, but there's no question that he has the arm strength to make any throw. His work ethic and the job a coaching staff does developing him will decide the rest.

The red flag with Mariota, IMO, is the question of his ability vs. "system quarterback". You can count on one hand the number of successful NFL QB's who came out of spread option college offenses

The latter is a bit of an unfair criticism as the NFL only recently started adapting their offenses to fit the talents of spread option college QBs. I'm not 100% sold on Mariota as a star, but he certainly has the physical tools.

I see your point and agree that the system QB is a valid concern, but most of those QBs were athletes who couldn't throw the ball that well but could run the option portion of the offense and learned to throw on the fly.

Mariota has been a very productive QB his entire career. He's much more of a passer than guys like Dixon, Tebow, etc.

Mariota was well rated by PFF (also Joey Bosa is awesome): https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/01/13/cfp-national-championship-buckeyes-vs-ducks/

And someone from Rotoworld who likes Mariota taking on the "system QB" criticism: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/51587/349/cians-corner-marcus-mariota

I understand the other concerns but I'm surprised there are people here who don't like Mariota's physical tools or "NFL skills."

I see his floor as Jake Locker, another mobile QB who was supposed to be the next big thing.

Totally different QB's.
