They got a new manager, and now they bring back Wada. They can do no wrong.

#Cubs agree to terms on the 2015 contract of LHP Tsuyoshi Wada.

This is a better thread. Thanks.

$4MM with $2MM available in incentives. Good for depth.

At worst you have a guy who lefties batted .177/.245/.184 against, so would be an expensive but solid LOOGY.

I'm starting to wonder if the Cubs could have a really eccentric pitching staff approach next season. We have a lot of serviceable 4-5 type SPs, and some of them have pretty heinous R-L splits. Maddon seems like he would be the type to do some kind of piggyback/match-up system where if matchups keep falling one way or the other, he could use a guy in long relief or as a loogy in the meantime. Even if it didn't work it would be fun to follow.

I like Wada just fine, but the price seems kinda steep...maybe I won't think that after the free agent season gets going.

Wada put up .8fWAR in 69 1/3IP last year to go with a 3.75FIP and 3.96xFIP. I fail to see how 4M is steep.

Edit:Crap, that was touched on in the thread below....

Arrieta

Hendricks

Wada

Wood

Turner

Doubront

Straily

Jackson

Jokisch

That's my guess at the current depth chart.

$4 million dollars is steep?

Here's some one year FA SP signings from last offseason:

  • Wandy Rodriguez - $13,000,000
Jorge de la Rosa - $11,000,000
    Dan Haren - $10,000,000
    Josh Johnson - $8,000,000
    Jason Hammel - $6,000,000
    Ryan Vogelsong - $5,000,000
    Edinson Volquez - $5,000,000
    Roberto Hernandez - $4,500,000
    Bruce Chen - $4,250,000
    Gavin Floyd - $4,000,000
    Chris Capuano - $2,250,000
    Jerome Williams - $2,100,000
    Tommy Hanson - $2,000,000
    Felipe Paulino - $1,750,000
    Paul Maholm - $1,500,000
    Chris Young - $1,250,000
    James McDonald - $1,000,000

Looking at that, I really like Wada at $4,000,000.

Considering injury history and age, yeah, I thought he could be had for less...(don't forget the incentives, which I'd assume kick in if he has anything close to a repeat of his 2014 numbers.) But after hearing the rumors of what Shields is going to cost, I reserve the right to change my mind and in a hurry.

It's expensive for a LOOGY, about right for a long reliever, and cheap for a 4/5 starter. So, depending on his role, it's a good deal.

Cubs reinstate outfielders Justin Ruggiano and Ryan Sweeney from the 60-day DL. 40-man roster at 37.

Not really a transaction, but it's a thing that happened with the Cubs roster.

#Cubs today claimed RHP Donn Roach off waivers from the #Padres. Roach, 25, went 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA in 16 appearances last year.

I expected a crummy ERA and good peripherals.

In reality, he's got a crummy ERA, crummy peripherals, and averaged 89 mph with his fastball while working primarily out of the bullpen.

He hasn't been particularly interesting in a couple years, not since he stopped being a college pitcher beating up on kids in A ball.

$5 says we try to pass him through waivers again before May 1.

We'll do that way before May 1. I'd be somewhat surprised if he lasts to the new year.

If you're one of the few who doesn't find a 3.5 GO/AO rate interesting...
