#Cubs tender contracts to 8 arb eligible players: Wood, Arrieta, Coghlan, Valbuena, Strop, Ruggiano, Doubront, Castillo

#Cubs non-tender catcher John Baker and LHP Wesley Wright

Why not tender a contract to Wright? He was good last year and the market for lefty relievers has been skyrocketing.

We non-tendered Wright, are you kidding me

I'm really shocked about Wright. Can't figure out a rationale for that one.

Why? Not that he was anything special. But Wright was a solid reliever last year. Never seemed like he really got a shot in close/late situations last year, but he was good whenever he went out there. Don't understand.

So we are down to Rosscup, Dubront and Wada for LHP out of the bullpen on the 40-man? Yuck

Jokisch and Ortiz, and technically Wood too.

i sure hope facebookcubs gets onto this one:

Charles Eric Thoreson Good job boys, although, I've never been a fan of Luis valbuena...just a waste of roster space.

The only plausible explanation I can come up with is they have a replacement in the bag (but not yet announced)

Old school rap alert!:

Wesley Wright

Punk

Always into somethin'

Getting' f---ed at night

Seriously though, I don't get this at all. Do you save a significant amount of payroll by giving Wright's role to a lefty already in our system? Who might that be?

Seeing as 31 year old Zach Duke just got a 3/15 contract, you'd think that if nothing else, Wright would be a great sign and trade.

However, with Arrietta and Valbuena likely end up with hefty raises as well as their existing offseason plans,

they simply don't have another 3-5 MM to give Wright, and out of respect for him, rather than make a low ball offer and ultimately head to a hearing, they're giving him more time to find a new gig. That and/or the fact that at 1.4MM, Wesley Wright was a bargain, and rather than give him a substantial raise, they'd rather find a new bargain.

The Wright thing is just odd. He was a usable piece and this doesn't seem like the type of front office that just throws away value. Has to be more to the story, right?

I'm afraid the replacement in the bag is stupid Felix Doubront

Yeah, he better be injured or something. Wright was fine and not getting paid a ton. Seems like a waste of value.

It's just baffling to me how you don't even tender Wright. I can see some semblance of logic for not being excited for him to be on the roster next year, but the odds that 1) he's not one of the 2 best LHRP on Opening Day and 2) no one would give even the smallest of value for him in trade seems impossibly low. It can't really be a cost saving thing either, Wright isn't going to make more than Wood or Wada and he'd make a trivial amount more than Doubront in arbitration. Really out of character for the front office to just throw away that value, even if it isn't of huge consequence.

Wright was a baffling non-tender last year under Maddon as well. I wonder if Joe doesn't trust him or something. Idk, only thing I can think of.

That's interesting. Didn't realize that. Makes as much sense as any other explanation.
