Going to be in the pen if healthy:

Justin Grimm

Jason Motte

Neil Ramirez

Hector Rondon

Pedro Strop

One of these guys has to start:

Edwin Jackson

Jacob Turner

Tsuyoshi Wada

Travis Wood

Felix Doubront

Competing for a spot:

Gonzalez Germen

Joseph Ortiz

Blake Parker

Zac Rosscup

Brian Schlitter

Will be in the minors:

Dallas Beeler

Eric Jokisch

C.J. Edwards

Not on 40 man, but could make club:

Armando Rivero

Assuming health, I think the top 5 guys on this list and two of the non-starters make the club. Which means that anyone else would not only have to beat out the other pitchers, but also a potential fifth bench guy to make the team.

Fowler got 9.5, 150k under the midpoint. Strop is evidently going to test arbitration. According to that kid, Murray.

We've definitely got depth from a pitching standpoint. Gotta wonder why this guy has been passed around so much? Seems he wouldn't be a bubble guy.

That is a deep pen. How many of those guys have options left? Someone has to get traded, no?

Everyone in the "competing for a spot" group has options except Parker, I think. Surprised Germen has been passed around so much if he has an option left.

No one in the "one of these guys has to start" group does.

Jackson will be an interesting test case to see if they just release him and take the salary hit in order to keep a better player on the roster.

He's probably the best option for the #5 spot.

I'd certainly take Wada and probably Wood over Jackson.

This is a puzzling statement as he's probably the worst option. I like Turner, Wada, and Wood all far better than Jackson.

I mean, to be honest, Jackson wasn't the best option for the #5 starter to end last year, and the Cubs have added two starters since then.

How cool would it be for Jackson to get a chance and run with it, regain his form and build some trade value? Sell him and Welly or Coghlin for prospects to a contender, around the same time trading some of our blocked prospects for a top of line starter or mid order LFer.

I don't think Jackson has the best odds of any of the options(and naturally would take the field over him), but I don't think the odds of him winning the job are all that different than the alternatives. It's a pretty muddled mess, thankfully it's one spot where this regime has generally made pretty good choices.

I get all the points against it, I just think that Jackson has one of his good years our of nowhere years where he has some positive regression and performs to his FIP/xFIP numbers the past 2 years. I personally want Turner to get it and turn into something.

the problem with that hope, is he's just remarkably hittable

Exactly, he is wild in the zone and his pitches get hammered. I believe that is one of the reasons there is a discrepancy between his FIP and results.

A minor league contract worth $700k?

One report described him as a workhorse reliever. He led the league in appearances three straight years, but he did it as a loogy with 50-60 IP each time.

Think it's a MLB deal.

FWIW - lefties were .167/.216/.324 vs him in 10.1 IP (38 batters) in his short 2013 stint

Career .208/.279/.298 vs lefties

Just never ever let him face a righty ever

(.282/.382/.426)
