If Myers does end up in San Diego I'd really like to target Seth Smith, that OF is pretty crowded

Might want to consider the possibility that SD is trying to add offense by bringing in an OF that doesn't suck and trading one that does, rather than swapping out one good hitter for another. Why on God's green Earth would they want to get rid of Smith?

Because none of Myers/Kemp/Smith are CF

In fairness, the Padres don't really have much at 1B, so Smith and Kemp especially could see time there.

Idle thought: Isn't it funny how mentions of David Ross and Jonny Gomes have completely disappeared now that Lester has signed on the dotted line?

Peavy chatter has gone silent too.

I wouldn't laugh too hard, because it's a pretty good bet we sign one of those guys and maybe both.

Wouldn't they need to make a roster move before they sign either?

Yes, assuming major-league contracts.

It may be that signing Gomes could happen only if they make some small deal of Ruggiano first. Ruggiano was $2 last year, I think.

Ross, I assume he'd be a target if they trade Castillo.

Rumors often drag behind actual discussions. I wonder if actual Ross discussions preceded the trade for Montero?

This happened, if anyone's interested.

The Orioles have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with left-handed reliever Wesley Wright, reports Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (on Twitter). Wright, a client of Reynolds Sports Management, was non-tendered by the Cubs at the beginning of the month.

Regarding the Myers-San Diego trade. Wonder if we r involved.

11:03am: The discussion remains open because Tampa is working various three and four-team possibilities, Topkin tweets. Souza is in play, tweets Rosenthal.

Heh heh. I knew it seemed like a possibility, but I didn't anticipate them dealing Ruggiano within hours! Funny.

By the way, this won't trigger Gomes move..... yet, at least. Motte had put the roster at 41, I think, so this just gets it back to 40.

They may reach an agreement with Gomes, but they'll need to clear another spot before they'll announce anything.

Will Carroll @injuryexpert

Rumors of a failed physical blowing up the Kemp deal to the Padres are starting to get louder.

This would only mean good things for the rest of the NL. If the Dodgers are allowed to get out from under that deal so easily, the sky's the limit for them.

@MLBNetworkRadio

Hoyer: We traded Ruggiano, we're working at a # of things in the outfield, we'll look to make a move out there, maybe multiple moves #Cubs

Minor league related but since I posted a tidbit from the same interview:

Jim Bowden @JimBowden_ESPN

Jed Hoyer told us the plan is for Addison Russell to play at AAA this year at shortstop #Cubs @MLBNetworkRadio

@Ken_Rosenthal: That is not the official deal, just an outline coming from a source. Competitive-balance picks also might be involved.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Turner, Joe Ross to #Nationals. Myers, Hanigan, Jose Castillo to #Padres. Souza, Ott, Rivera, Smith, Bauers to #Rays (Souza, Ott from Nats).

Looks to me like the Nationals are the biggest winner in that trade. The padres get the best piece, but they sure are giving up a lot. TB gets couple solid prospects but it's a pretty marginal return with no marquee prospect.

Volquez to the Royals for 2/20

That's 28 million to Morales, Volquez, and Rios, yikes

I think I'm the only one who doesn't mind Rios on a 1/11 deal. He's only a year off a 3.1fWAR season and 2 years of a 4.2fWAR season. It's no worse than throwing 9M at Masterson/Anderson.

Fuld had his most productive season as a major league player in 2014, splitting time between the Twins and A’s and hitting a combined .239 with a .321 on-base percentage. Yet the numbers alone don’t give you a real understanding of the 33-year-old Fuld’s value to a team.
