Just now realized that might not be clear, I'm talking about Miguel Montero.

Not sure if that changes the previous posts, but w/r/t him being a DH, I'm not sure why that'd be the case. He's continued to play exclusively catcher, even this year when there was opportunity to sprinkle him in at 1B with Goldschmidt hurt. He caught a decent number of baserunners stealing, and he ranks very strong at pitch framing. Plus, in this arrangement he'll be playing 30-50 fewer games a year so he'll be more likely to hold up.

Got it. Agreed, Miguel Montero would be a good fit.

I would be all over trading for Span and using Alcantara and some prospects to get a young pitcher. I just don't know why the Nationals would trade him at this point, and if they did they'd probably want a better headliner and/or someone who could impact the MLB team sooner.

With Laroche's 2015 mutual option, wouldn't they kind of have to move Span? Rendon sticks at 3B, Zimmerman to LF, Jasyson Werth RF and Harper in CF. As far as package goes, what if Amaya is replaced by say Vizcaino. He could immediately step into their bullpen.

Lester 6/130, 7th year option with 5M buyout

Thats a little low for Lester, isn't it? I've thought 6/150 would be about the starting point for him. Hope I am wrong.

Hard for me to see 6/150 being a starting point for Lester. The biggest SP contracts of the last 2 offseasons were right around that mark(Tanaka & Greinke) and both of them were at least 3 years younger than Lester. Inflation will make it not a 1 to 1 comparison, but I think 25 million/year is on the higher end of what to expect for Lester. Having Scherzer as a FA alongside him probably serves to suppress his deal a bit too, even if only in preventing a team from panicking and adding 30 million to an offer to ensure they get one.

Lester 6/130, 7th year option with 5M buyout

Andrew Miller 3/18

Trade Mckinney+Amaya for Denard Span

Trade Alcantara+CJ+Vogelbach for Alex Cobb(TB still has Archer,Smyly,Odorizzi,Hellickson,Moore,Karns)

1.Span(L)RF

2.Castro®SS

3.Soler®RF

4.Rizzo(L)1B

5.Bryant®LF

6.Baez®2B

7.Valbuena(L)3B

8.Castillo®C

SP:Lester(L),Arrieta®,Cobb®,Hendricks®,Dubrount/Wood(L)

RP:Rodon,Ramirez,Strop,Miller,Grimm,Rosscup,Rivero

Yeah, i'd take that team in a heartbeat. Not overly unrealistic, though I agree with the assessment of the Span trade and I still think Tampa trades Hellickson or Moore before Cobb.

I don't think Harper can realistically be an every day CF. They have other options, they have a bunch of young guys in Taylor/Souza/Goodwin, but at that point you're taking a clear step down from Span. His contract isn't that prohibitive that they wouldn't want more justification to deal him than an OF prospect and a bullpen arm. After all, like you mention they're pretty set in the field, and they return their entire rotation as well.

If they did trade Span, I could see them being interested in CJ or Johnson. They return that entire rotation, but Zimmermann and Fister are both FA after 2015.

If they're willing to move Moore, the Cubs should be on that immediately. Moore hasn't even come close to tapping his potential and he's still been a solid pitcher. Hellickson, on the other hand, I want nothing to do with.

That would be a solid starting 8, though I would change the order up a bit and put Rizzo in front of Soler and Valbuena in front of Baez.

Castillo is about as good as you're going to get as an 8 hitter--decent pop, good eye. I'm OK going with him until (if) Schwarber is ready. Solid all around ballplayer.

@georgeofman: Are the Dodgers shopping Puig? You bet and the Cubs are one of several teams interested.

No chance id trade Bryant for him. No way.

However, if they wanted Baez, i'd do it. He could replace Hanley at SS .

much as it pains me to say, it wouldn't really make much sense to try to shed Puig's personality and take Baez back in the process

i'd give up Bryant, in a heartbeat, though
