The neat thing about the roster composition is that you really don't need another infielder beyond Valbuena once Bryant is on the team(this presumes Bryant at 3B). Valbuena can back up both 2B and 3B, Baez can backup 3B and SS, Alcantara can also play 2B, so you have a lot of flexibility with what you do there. Keep the 8 man pen, get a bat-first bench guy, etc.

THIS. We'll be like a little league all star team, full of kids that can play anywhere around your mashing 1B and corner OF.

It's fun to hear for years that part of the reason for stockpiling prospects is that they are currency that can be traded, only to have some fans start clutching their pearls at the thought of trading them now that we are on the verge of being good.

You're literally terrified Theo is going to build a completely home grown lineup.

As for the clutching pearls comment I assume is directed at me-Im perfectly fine trading prospects. But trading top 5-10 in baseball prospects? [expletive] no. We can trade from Almora on down and do very well there.

Depends what you are hoping to get back. We did just trade for a top 5-10 prospect. That deal can essentially be broken down as Samardzija for Russell and McKinney/Straily for Hammel. So we got a top 5-10 prospect for a season and a half of a solid #2 starter making less than market value. The Cubs can try to deal starting with the likes of Almora and Pierce Johnson and Vogelbach, but to get impact players they're going to have to offer up more than that.

The only difference is that the little league all star players are pitching when they're not playing SS (or some other position).

Soler, Lake, and Russell can pitch in a three man rotation, no need for a pen.

Depends on what type of impact players we're talking. If it's for pitching, I'd much rather spend the money on Lester, Scherzer, or Hammels, (assuming the Phils would take a package involving more money and lesser prospects,) and then use our tradable assets toward Stanton. I'd start with Baez, Almora, and go from there. If they insisted on Soler or Russell instead of Baez, it's a tough call. If they insist on Soler and Russell, they'd better be ready to throw something along the lines of Eovaldi or Alvarez into their end of the pot.

Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the Phillies "will look to trade" Domonic Brown this winter "for a similar change-of-scenery-type player."

The news doesn't come as a surprise. After making the All-Star team in 2013, Brown has tumbled to a .234/.284/.347 batting line with just eight homers this season and has frustrated with his defense. He's also arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. That said, he just turned 27 on Wednesday and has upside that will be attractive to other teams. The Phillies won't have trouble finding a taker if they're indeed motivated to deal him.

holy [expletive], Dominic Brown is terrible this year

also, a reminder: Blue Jays were interested in him and Amaro asked for Joey Bautista

I'm solely interested in him so he can be used in a possible Stanton package to alleviate the amount of 2nd tier prospects we'd need to include to get him, or maybe he can be used to acquire a pitcher as well. Outside of that I'm not all that interested in seeing him in a Cubs uniform.

Was this at least last offseason?

Yes. And Heyman said there was no truth to the rumor, though it does sound like a very Amaro thing to do

So does Edwin Jackson. We'd probably be eating most of his salary, but we would regardless.

Haven't seen Travis Wood's name mentioned much as a trade candidate. Probably more attractive to teams than E Jax. The sell high ship has sailed and sunk, but he's still got value at his age and with 2 full seasons under team control. I can't imagine both he and Jackson in the rotation, and it's not like we don't have depth. If we can't find a taker for Jackson, why not shop Wood?

Shyeah, from his bat alone.

Buster Olney speculated that if the A's go into a rebuilding process this offseason that Josh Donaldson is a likely trade candidate. He would be nice.

Think we can trade Rich Harden for him?

I could see us trying to find the deluxe version of Olt to serve as a bench bat/platoon hedge with Valbuena(Chris Johnson?), but there's little reason to add anyone of significance on the infield.

Correct, my most recent offseason plan was something like:

- Jaxon for Upton + Johnson + pile of 2017 money

- Trade for Montero

- Sign Maeda

- Sign Liriano

- Sign Aoki

- Trade Coghlan and Wood for whatever

Montero/Castillo do a mostly even platoon and really anchors the #6 spot behind Rizzo/Soler/Bryant, we get our 2 new SP, and there's a platoon for either 3B(Valbuena/Johnson) or LF(Aoki/Ruggiano) depending on what you want to do with Bryant's position. Baez and Alcantara aren't forced any higher than 7th in the order and have competition(platoon/Russell/Upton), and we only need one of Turner/Doubront/Straily(Wood too if you like him and the money works) to be useful. If we can sneak Randall Delgado out in that Montero deal to add one more bullpen arm to the pile, that'd be cool too.

I would be all over trading for Span and using Alcantara and some prospects to get a young pitcher. I just don't know why the Nationals would trade him at this point, and if they did they'd probably want a better headliner and/or someone who could impact the MLB team sooner.
