Did you know that? I knew that he was a FA after next year, but wasn't aware that it required the non-tender mechanism that would invalidate a QO.

I feel like that's been standard with these IFA contracts where you get out early. I'm pretty sure Matsui and Kosuke(lol) had it as well. Additionally, I'm not Dave Cameron, it's literally his job to know these things.

Those guys weren't FA in the QO era though, there's a lot less semantical difference in non-tender v. free agent without it. Anyway I wasn't asking to criticize, I was just surprised by it and wasn't sure if it was common knowledge I missed.

They couldn't offer arb to secure a compensatory pick. It's the same idea, you get early FA and you don't have a draft pick dragging down your FA contract.

How else would he become a free agent?

That is an amazingly terrible trade by Boston.

They got a solid starting caliber player for next year for 2 months of Lester on a last place team and a jonny gomes that has been awful. Why is it amazingly terrible?

Because I think Lester is worth more than 1.2 years of a marginally above average OF?

You don't seem to be taking into account that Lester is a free agent who will be leaving this year while Cespedes could easily be more productive out of Oakland and kept by the Red Sox longterm. They didn't just trade for 1.2 years of him, they get 1.2 years and first dibs.

Can anyone recall the last time a single team acquired two of three consensus best available trade targets (arguably two of the two; is Price even available? Is he better than Shark or Lester? Probably not.) in a single season?

I'll be rooting like hell for the A's in the postseason, not that I don't normally

If Hammel didn't have a 9+ ERA in his 4 starts, I doubt Lester is an A. At least we'll be able to grab Hammel next year relatively cheaply again.

Is anyone else shocked? The A's are showing some serious balls with those deals. Anything less than a WS will be an utter failure.

From the guy who basically invented the 'the playoffs are a crapshoot and there's no sense worrying about it' theory, yes, I am quite shocked.

He probably figured that he's been pulling top prospects out of his ass for well over a decade, and when you share a division with three spend thrifts like the Angels, M's, and Rangers, sometimes you have to grab today by the shirt and curlies and run.
