With Lester no longer costing a draft pick as a FA does he now become FA target #1 for the Cubs in November?

This hurts the Cubs' chances of signing him (because of the draft pick compensation issue) more than it helps it imo

I think draft pick compensation has been pretty much a non-starter for an FA with this FO, even moreso for a post-30 guy like Lester. Removing the QO probably ups his price, but the Cubs are more likely to pay X + that price increase than X + a pick and pool money.

Wow. Beane not screwing around, tired of his [expletive] not working in the playoffs.

There are multiple people who are paid to write about baseball talking about how the Red Sox just got 3.5 years of Cespedes. Depressing.

Lester's contract just went up about $30-40 million.

You have to appreciate that Beane is going all-in this season, but I think people are underselling what Cespedes will do with the change from Oakland to Boston - he should be a very good hitter for them.

I'm guessing the price increase will be more than the 2nd rounder or whatever is worth.

They don't have to be equivalent, although I really doubt it's 30-40 million like mentioned above.

Beane is either dying or has another job lined up.

I am torn between wanting to see them win the WS and wanting to see all this come crashing down with the Angels edging them out for the division followed by a WC play-in loss.

This was my thought. Money is what the Cubs want to play with and I suspect player acquisition that purely costs money and not talent in any form is the first choice. I don't expect 2014/2015 off-season to be the ramp up, but I still hold out some hope the FO wants to start the Bryant/Baez/Soler years with a better MLB roster and a splash so that the pressure isn't all on those guys and Rizzo/Castro. Lester is going to get too many years but is still top of my list.

That is an amazingly terrible trade by Boston.

They got a solid starting caliber player for next year for 2 months of Lester on a last place team and a jonny gomes that has been awful. Why is it amazingly terrible?

Think it's a good trade for everyone.

Boston basically get their compensation pick + nice upgrade on Gomes for Lester who was leaving anyway end of the year.

Boston could definitely have gotten a different type of return, but overall I don't think it's a bad one. One year of Cespedes isn't a ton of surplus value, but the Red Sox also have the unique position for a seller of 1) absolutely needing to be a contender next year and 2) having a strong farm system with a lot of talent in the upper levels. It's for that reason that getting a good prospect or a couple decent ones for Lester doesn't help them as much as the average team. Add in the competitive balance pick and the possibility of a pick from giving Cespedes a QO and you still get some future talent too.

Because I think Lester is worth more than 1.2 years of a marginally above average OF?

Question for everyone: Would you rather have Addison Russell or Cespedes?

Dead serious: think we could trade back for Hammel in exchange for bullpen help and a ML OF?

I've operated under the assumption that this is how they should behave, but so far they haven't taken advantage much of the money and nothing else opportunities.

I think everyone but Mojo would say Addison Russell and it's not even close.

Not really sure why we would want Hammel back at this point. We can just sign him in the offseason if we really like him.

You don't seem to be taking into account that Lester is a free agent who will be leaving this year while Cespedes could easily be more productive out of Oakland and kept by the Red Sox longterm. They didn't just trade for 1.2 years of him, they get 1.2 years and first dibs.

Two months, or around uhhh 10-12 starts, of Lester?

To be fair, it depends more on the other offers on the table for Lester than Lester's remaining starts. So, it's the value of Cespedes vs. "the value of other offers", for 10-12 Lester starts.
