Heyman mentioned we're not going to deal Ruggiano or Coghlan.

Which is a nice indicator that the Cubs will actually try in 2015.

Not trading Schierholtz last year didn't indicate much.

That's one guy (they traded 3 OFs last year, all under contract for 2014). Ruggiano and Coghlan are the type of players of bench/fringe starters who have value for contenders (especially if they need to he by for a month with Bryant in the minors) and are more valuable staying on the Cubs than being traded (see DeJesus trade market).

I was about to say the same thing. If you really want to specialize I can see Coghlan being a little surer a bet with the bat, but he's basically skinny Randall Simon, so plan the roster accordingly.

I'm still betting and hoping for a consolidation of assets type trade. (Russell/Fujikawa/Bonifacio/Outfielder) for a couple Single A arms to dream on and cash relief.

@brianmctaggart: Astros getting increased calls about pitching today after they said Monday they'd be willing to move a starter. Goal remains: add offense.

I'd love to her ahold of Foltynewicz, McCullers, or Feliz without giving up any of the future five. Perhaps we could build something around Vogelbach.

Pretty much. Villanueva too. These guys are the equivalent of a $20 gift card to a store you don't really like. No harm in taking a look around, even if you only walk out with Post-Its and and paper clips.

I was about to blow up on this, then realized I was thinking about the wrong Russell.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

The Cubs have rebuffed inquiries by the Yankees and others for outfielder Justin Ruggiano, and also are expecting to keep the rejuvenated Chris Coghlan, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. They might also look to trade outfielder Nate Schierholtz, but they can put him through waivers in August and make a deal then. Meanwhile, the versatile Emilio Bonifacio is now drawing interest

Sounds like one of Russell and Wright are gone for certain. I think its a pretty close call on Coghlan; Ruggiano and Valbuena likely stay because they are under control next season. Why anyone would want Jackson is beyond me. His FIP is climbing of late.

Dark horse candidate - how about Wada? Not a game changer, but has he show enough to fill a spot for a contender? Would it even be worth it?

I want to see more of Wada. We have him as a pre-arb next year, followed by 3 arb seasons. Granted, he's old. But he may be a useful part of some sort.

Well Moyer was old for years and years and years and he was still pretty decent for most of those years. Some people can do it lol

I'm really hoping a contending team buys into the Bonifacio hype. He's come off the DL red hot like he started the year. Not to say he wouldn't have value to a team in contention, but he's clearly playing over his head, currently.

If the FO could get a fairly intriguing prospect for Scott Hairston, I have to think Bonifacio could net something interesting enough.

If you want a real darkhorse to be traded, I'll go with Fujikawa.

Lester has been scratched from his start tomorrow...

He's been reported as one of the FA pitchers the Cubs were interested in this offseason. Any trade would make it that much more expensive to sign him.

I think all we've got to realistically deal this month is Bonifacio and one of the LHP, likely Russell. Villanueva and Schierholtz are August deals, they'll clear waivers.

I think Nate will be DFA'd as soon as Bonifacio gets traded. I'm of the belief Javy will be called up, and if Nate isn't cut, the bench would be Baker and 3 outfielders, with the backup infielder being the starting CFer (Alcantara). There also would be no backup third baseman (Coghlan maybe could?). I think we see Watkins or Valaika brought up with Javy.

If not in the next few days, he'll probably be traded in August.

And if he goes to the Dodgers, likely virtually impossible to sign him.
