Only for teams run by a guy who regularly cooks his breakfast off of a hot engine block.

He's gonna have to get rid of the car and switch to those giant bags of generic cereal from the bottom shelf if they sign Price

But that's his house!

yeah the advantage the Cubs have in getting hamels is that that have better pieces to offer in a trade. they have no advantage over other teams that are just gonna offer price a pile of money.

I'd rather get a Ross/Teheran/Carrasco now and still have the large contract to give to Heyward or spread it around to a few guys like Kendrick, a CF of some sort and a mid tier SP like Gallardo or something.

Hamels is getting paid FA prices, you just get to enjoy fewer of the seasons that he's still a high end pitcher.

$$, sure close enough - not worth quibbling over. Years? Nooooooot even close to FA pricing, and that is massive. Time is just as important as money on pitchers, if not waaaaaaay more important.

Again, having Hamels from 32-35 is not really better than having someone like Price from 30-36. You're cutting out a big chunk of the good with a similar ramp for decline. And that's if they're equivalent pitchers, which in this case they are not.

You are making a huge and likely incorrect assumption about Price's contract.

I think the thing with Hamels is the whole "bird in the hand" scenario. Getting Hamels now is a much better guarantee that you'll have him next year than hoping for a FA SP. You also know Hamels' price. You don't know what Price will cost. And we've seen in recent offseasons that the Cubs put things on hold while they go after big ticket FAs (Lester, Tanaka). Plus, the Cubs are a budget concerned team, therefore even if they go all-in for Price, they have to then regroup to figure out what they have left to do in the budget. If you have Hamels, you have all offseason to figure out what you have left in the budget for other FAs.

I'd be more worried about not being able to land Heyward if they FO forced their own hand to also shop for the most expensive pitcher on the market at the same time.

They're not getting Heyward AND a nine figure SP.

I think this is management's thinking. I hope so, anyway.

Well said. The whole idea of the Cubs having some inside track to signing Price is ridiculous. If the money is close, then maybe. Otherwise follow the money.

I'd love Carrasco if the price isn't outrageous.

From what I've read today, it seems like they were just testing his value, with no intent to actually trade him.

Passan and Salisbury seem to think Hamels to Texas is happening.

Thanks!

And yeah Rangers going after him is a bit confusing. They're 5 games back of the second wild card I believe.

I'm sorry but Alfaro kind of sucks. Not particularly good behind the plate, plate discipline sucks, and is known for his power despite a career .430 slugging. He's like Avicail Garcia in that he gets overrated because he physically resembles a superstar.

I guess I shouldn't say "sucks" because the potential is there, but I wouldn't want him headlining anything in a deal of this magnitude if I'm a GM.
