@KCJHoop: Knicks-Mavs trade and Bulls passing on low price tag for Afflalo could be good signs for Melo derby.

KC Johnson is an idiot, but this does make sense. You would think the Bulls would have a pretty good idea where they stand in regards to Melo. Scottie is over in Europe hanging out with him and Thibs is talking to everyone Melo knows.

If I'm choosing between Harden/Howard and Rose/Noah, I know which way I'd go and it's not pro-Chicago.

You forgot Thibs/McHale

and western conference vs. eastern conference

and Chicago vs. Houston

And FWIW, Howard isn't quite what he used to be. In terms of PER, the gap between he and Noah wasn't much last year.

This. If we land Melo it will largely be due to Thibs.

In terms of PERception(EH?? EH????) it's still pretty big.

I don't think conference affiliation matters a thing.

And there are taxes.

I mean, I think Thibs is the 2nd best coach in the NBA, but is he really the dynamic force that players want to come play for?

NBA turning into a 3 on 3 league? That would actually be pretty entertaining to watch.

Nobody's making their decision on where to sign based on Jimmy Butler and Tony Snell

You don't think going through the gauntlet that is the west vs having a free ride to at least the conference finals in the east matters?

And yeah, it's been pretty well documented that Melo has real interest in playing for Thibs and McHale is pretty shitty so that is a large gap.

The difference in taxes is pretty small

In the last 10 years, yes, only the Spurs have been able to. The Bulls have 1 player under contract who would be in San Antonio's top 6 in PER last season. Jimmy Butler would be tied for 11th If the Bulls come away from this offseason without LBJ(No), Melo (35%), or Love (I dunno, 10%?), then the team as constructed is not a serious contender.

Given the way the two teams were constructed last year, the fact that the Bulls lost their superstar for the season, and that Thibs was forced to play offensively limited players long minutes... wouldn't you expect the Bulls to have terrible PERs?

I'm not sure what you're saying, shouldn't the Bulls have terrible PERs because they weren't very good? That's the problem, and a rather chicken-egg one. The only guy that really nosedived was Boozer, and he's old and broken-down. I honestly have no idea what to expect from Rose, or what to do about him.

Judging by free agent movement over the last, what 15 years? No.

If the interest is real. Not sure what the expletive is s-hitty? It certainly didn't stop last year's marquee FA from going there.

Huh, yeah, that looks pretty negligible.

Well... yeah. That was my point. Didn't you read the second part of my post? The part you didn't quote? You're trying to compare this year's Bulls team with this year's Spurs team. I, on the otherhand, am trying to compare this year's Spurs team with a potential Bulls roster that includes additions not named Carmelo, LeBron, and Love.

Outside of the extra year in NYC, I'd say that $1.5MM over 4 years is a pretty negligible difference between the other 3.

I don't think SSR was being sarcastic...

Maybe. But that also may be more true for a pass-first type of player. Melo likes taking a lot of shots. So does Harden. Howard complained in LA when he didn't get the ball enough. I could see that being somewhat of an issue in Houston. Chicago could end up with a top seed in the East based on their coach, defense, etc. Melo would just have to be a guy on offense that takes a significant amount of shots. That may be more appealing to him.

Remember how we used to dream about that Charlotte #1?

Man.

Should have traded it the year Charlotte won 8 games and looked hopeless like I said.

explanation for what the randolph inclusion does for melo from realgm

Randolph is an additional salary we can add in a S&T option with New York for Anthony, meaning we can take on more money from them, probably a bad contract like Smith.

Boozer, Dunleavy, Randolph, James, Amundson & Brewer all expire in 2015, and we can give Melo the max whilst taking on Smith potentially as well.

I'm so broken that I'm just assuming that if they land Melo then Rose is, of course, going to only be able to come back as a shadow of himself or just ultimately keep breaking down.

A traded player can't be aggregated with other players for two months after being traded for. S&T explanation doesn't really make sense. Sometimes you can split up trades so a guy is technically traded alone but that doesn't really add up in a Melo hypothetical either.
