There's a Andrus for Kemp rumor floating around, that's an interesting scenario. I'd want more for Kemp if I'm the Dodgers, I think, and would ask for at least one of their top prospects as well. Their contacts are real similar, iirc.

Kemp has negative value at this point. Andrus for Kemp would be a fantastic deal for the Dodgers.

I guess, personally I'm still a big fan of Kemp, so I'm probably overvaluing him a bit. I wish we'd be looking at acquiring him as long as it didn't take one of the the top prospects. A Samardzija, Barney and maybe someone like Ha for Kemp, Zach Lee and another prospect or two (Tim Federowicz + Chris Reed?) is something I like. If we are dead set on trading Samardzija and really could take on a big contract if they like a guy enough even given the constraints (like Theo has said).

I love Kemp, if he's healthy. But he's just not currently a prime target to go after. May or may not ever be again, but there's too much risk with him now to give up a guy that definitely can bring back quality, if we decided to move him.

Seriously, if Kemp was placed on waivers right now, is there a team out there that would claim him? My honest guess is no.

Think of it this way. Why would you pay any player cost to take on Kemp's contract(6/130) when you could just pay that money(plus a 2nd rounder to be pedantic) to sign Ellsbury? Ellsbury is at least coming off a productive season, Kemp's last 600 PAs have been about replacement level.

That's not to say that Kemp doesn't interest me, but it'd have to be a strict salary dump from LA, which they might not be interested in(for obvious reasons). Russell for Kemp with the Dodgers paying about 45M of his contract feels about right.

Still paying too much salary. Eh, 6/85 ain't bad.

http://MLB.com 's @ToddZolecki reports that @Phillies will sign catcher Carlos Ruiz to 3-year, $26 million deal.

That seems...high...for a 34 year old catcher coming off a sub-par offensive year where he missed half the season.

Thus far the Phillies are well on the way to doing the impossible and fielding an even older squad then last year. Well done Amaro.

Not sure what is so impossible about fielding a squad that is older than it was the previous year.

Part of Ruiz's diminished playing time was due to a 25 game adderall suspension.

He's 34, but he still graded out very well on defense, and is all of one year removed from a .935 OPS.

It's not really an unreasonable contract

Ruiz seems like an okay bet to get you that much in production over 3 years, and on an efficiency basis might even be a better deal than some of the other catchers that sign.

The other side is that Ruiz will be the 7th player in next year's Phillies lineup+rotation next year that is at least 35 years old, and the Phillies missed the playoffs by more than 20 games last year. Ruiz's contract won't be the one that ruins their ability to compete again, but at the same time it isn't exactly worthy of praise because Amaro is now throwing quarters in the wishing well instead of $20 bills.

I don't think anybody was heaping praise on it.

You do realize if they made no moves the team would have been...a year older than last year's team.

Most teams that finish 16 games under .500 with the oldest roster in baseball don't attempt to get older in the offseason

A FA deal can be considered reasonable without it being a 1Y/2M injury rehab.

Ruiz is 35, but he has less mileage on him than most any other 35 year old catcher. McCann is 5 years younger and he's caught 98 more games than him.
