Miggy back to 1B, Castellanos to 3B, and money freed up to re-sign Scherzer.

Fielder is going to put up some monster numbers in Texas (until he gets too fat and falls apart). Also opens up Profar for 2B, finally.

But yeah, obviously the Tigers needed Scherzer more than they needed Fielder. If there weren't other factors like that in play, and it was just a one-for-one trade I'd actually favor Texas in the deal, but it's kind of a wash, given all the secondary moves that happen for both teams now.

And unless I am misreading things, it ostensibly removes a SS target from the Cards, whose options seem to be dwindling.

Wow. That type of deal is so rare. Off-hand the most recent one would be Dodgers - Red Sox a couple of years ago. Before that, McGriff-Fernandez for Carter-Alomar?

I've become so acclimated to deals being "Vet for Prospects" that something like this seeming so easy is surprising

Dave Schoenfield is saying this might open up room for the Tigers to go after Cano. Would guess Kinsler to 3B in that case.

That doesn't really make sense. I'd imagine this opens up room to retain Scherzer

I guess Martinez goes full time at 1B now, Cabrera to DH, Castellanos to 3B. It does free up money to resign Scherzer, but who bats behind Cabrera in order now? He'll be walked 3 times a game.

It doesn't really save Detroit that much in terms of yearly savings. They're paying 30M and Prince has 7 years left, so say $4M per year. Prince was scheduled to make $24M per year and Kinsler's contract goes 16-16-14-11 so the first two years they're only saving $4M and the third year is $6M. Scherzer only made $6.725M this year and he's going to make a hell of a lot more than that in whatever long term deal he ends up signing.

I think it was more about getting out from underneath the last few years of the contract than this year and next. They have Peralta and Infante off already and Hunter and VMart off the books after this season too. Out side of Verlander, Anibal, and Cabrera, they really have some payroll flexibilty. Should be plenty of cash to lock up Scherzer if they want to. Might be in the same spot as we are with Shark though.

I also wonder what Detroit fans are thinking here. Should DD be criticized for not having seen this coming with Fielder? He handed him a bloated contract just two years ago knowing that he had several young, very talented pitchers who would need to be taken care of, plus Miggy a year or two from now. Isn't DD lucky as hell that he found someone willing to take this contract at all?

it's generally understood that Ilitch was behind the Fielder signing; he's getting old & wants to win

So now Ilitch is ok with trading him? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Illitch hasn't been doing so well lately, maybe he's no longer calling the shots.

They just told him they were opening more franchises in Texas and needed his signature.
