With Mike Olt on his way to the Cubs it means Kris Bryant will be learning RF and Cubs hope to have a future OF of Soler, Almora, Bryant.

God, Kaplan. Just try to be intelligent, just once.

I mean, there is a chance that Mike Olt will turn out to be good. Thus, Bryant would move to the OF.

Even if Olt turned out to be good, it'd probably be him going to the OF.

I do wonder who sticks at 3rd between Vitters and Olt.

Olt's a far better defender at 3B and there's doubts about Vitters' viability at 3B anyway, so Vitters would not be staying at 3B.

Even I recognize this

I don't necessarily see why

Really? Because Olt has to be better than Bryant on defense.

But the Cubs are not going to convert him over right away until there's a clear sign there's no room for him at 3B at the major league level. He loses a lot of value by moving off 3B. There's no reason for them to do that when Olt is not a guarantee to be manning 3B for the foreseeable future.

It's the same reason they didn't move Baez off SS even though we've got Castro locked up long term.

So Valbuena to second?

I've seen rumblings about dealing Barney(to Detroit?) or turning around and flipping Olt(Philly or NYY?). Will be interesting to see if either happens at the deadline, although neither HAS to happen until the offseason.

But any of these guys could be moved elsewhere, get worse or get injured before a theoretical Bryant/Olt/Vitters spring training battle for 3B even comes close to fruition. So there is no point in pointing out they currently play the same position today and therefore insist Bryant has to move positions.

From a friend of mine who is a very knowledgeable Rangers fan:

If that 3rd player is significant, this is a horrible trade.

RT @JeffPassan: Source says RHP Justin Grimm is the third player.

Hmm. Grimm's only 25 (in August) and has a 4.25 xFIP this year. That's not bad.

Final deal: Cubs trade Matt Garza to the Rangers for Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards, Justin Grimm and PTBNL.

I know a lot of Ranger fans that are going to be pissed about this package for a rental.

they're not going to move the guy they just spent $6 mil on just in case the blind guy hitting .210 in the PCL figures it out.

Rangers fans are under the same delusion wrt Olt that many Cubs fans were about Brett Jackson last year.

Still can't remember last thing Cubs did that I didn't like.

Sources: A's late involvement in Garza sweepstakes pushed Rangers to up ante. General sense is Cubs got great return for 2 months of Garza.

Apparently PTBNL is from two lists. One full of decent prospects if the Rangers either extend Garza or win the WS, the other is scrubs/filler.

Is PTBNL the 4th player?
