Wonder who the third is. I'm not a fan of Olt-as-centerpiece, but it looks like that's what we've got.

That's impossible, because Edwards > Olt

He is, but he's also in Single-A, which means he's not contributing to the Cubs anytime soon.

I know, Kris Bryant is done as a prospect after his performance last night.

Yeah, as much as I like Olt's potential, I see him as an attempt to get serviceable 3B numbers out of him before flipping him to make room for whomever his ready to take is place, whether it be Bryant, Baez, Vitters, Villanueva... whoever.

From the latest BP minor league update featuring Edwards, July 17

C.J. Edwards, RHP, Rangers (Low-A Hickory): 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 K. Edwards is one of the best stories in the minors. He has a fastball that can touch the mid 90s with plenty of life, a potential plus curveball, and a developing changeup that flashes the ability to be an average pitch. Edwards has a small frame and may ultimately wind up in a relief role. Teams may target him in trade talks at the deadline; 52.0 IP, 33 H, 16 ER, 19 BB, 75 K in last 10 starts.

I've heard 2 version of Cubs-Rangers deal: One with Olt, Edwards and Rougned Odor. Another with Neil Ramirez substituted for Odor.

Please, please, please have Odor in the deal

Or else it will stink?

How far a guy is from the majors, or how low in the minor league system, doesn't preclude him from being the centerpiece of a trade.

even if olt turns out to be a successful rehab project, statements like that are just so absurdly dumb. i'm not sure why people can't help but be worried about what position guys might play in the majors when they are years and 3-4 levels of baseball away from the majors.

At the beginning stages of seeing rumors of who might come back, so it's good that the whining has already started.

beginning stages of seeing rumors?

have you been away from the internet?

In the case of Bryant though, one could reasonably expect that he won't take "years" to make the major leagues.

At least, he shouldn't take years. And a few of those levels better just be brief stints.

I do wonder who sticks at 3rd between Vitters and Olt. I'm guessing Vitters goes to LF in Iowa? Edited by Elrhino

Olt's a far better defender at 3B and there's doubts about Vitters' viability at 3B anyway, so Vitters would not be staying at 3B.

With Mike Olt on his way to the Cubs it means Kris Bryant will be learning RF and Cubs hope to have a future OF of Soler, Almora, Bryant.

God, Kaplan. Just try to be intelligent, just once.

So Olt, Edwards, and someone else + PBTNL. Not great, not bad. Feels about right.

I agree. For 2 months of Garza, this is a decent/good return, depending upon who the "someone else" is.

Wait. I realize that we aren't giving up Russell in the deal, but I liked the trade a few days ago were it was Garza and Russell for Edwards, Olt, Ramirez and the SS who I can't think of right now but who actually seemed really promising even though he has no power.

Why not just do that one?

Because of those medicals that didn't look pretty?

Ramirez might still be the 3rd player, and Russell is worth more than a low level prospect.
