I know everyone wants pitching but I really like Jackie Bradley Jr.

I guess that means Owens, Webster as Cecchini are involved in the discussions.

I dont know much about Cecchini. He has a weird offensive profile for a 3B, is that where he's gonna stay?

Defensively, he's definitely able to stick at 3B. With Middlebrooks and Bogaerts ahead of him, he's probably got to hit for some power to play a corner OF spot in Boston.

I don't even particularly want Bauer anymore even if it was Bauer plus for Garza. The guy has been an unmitigated disaster in his brief time in the bigs and his complete unwillingness to change his style makes him not all that interesting. If he's willing to throw strikes and take a chance at giving up hits rather than walking the park then maybe we talk. The same thing goes with his refusal to stop intentionally pitching up in the zone.

33 innings over 2 seasons, you can't really take much from that. And i'm not going to pretend to know everything on him, but what I read through the twitter leaves is that he is listening to a ton of people and changing his style, but he is attributing his struggles to that and would like to switch back.

Also he's 22 years old. 22 years old and people are apparently expecting him to be all-star caliber already. There will be growing pains, and his upside is tremendous. He's worth targeting, IMO.

It's the fact that he relies on people chasing to get outs. He'd rather walk a guy then throw a strike and let his defense do the work. He's also been on record about how he likes to pitch up in the zone. When you're facing ML players with legit bat speed, that's going to result in a ton of home runs. These are the kind of strategies that might work in the low minors, but they aren't going to work against the best of the best.

If people were excited about a potential Martin Perez package from the Rangers, they should be doing handstands over Bauer.

I didn't know anything about Cecchini, so I did a google search using all I had (last name). I tell you what, one letter can make a huge difference on your impression of a player.

Nothing we don't already know, but still...

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reported earlier today that the Indians and Rangers "are known to have strong interest" in Garza. A Garza trade appears to be a question of "when," rather than "if." I imagine the Cubs' focus in Garza talks will be on pitching, and I would guess they'd bring up names like Danny Salazar, Carlos Carrasco (optioned to Triple-A today), and even Trevor Bauer. The Indians also seek bullpen help, notes Heyman, a need that the Cubs could accommodate.

If it took including Russell with Garza to get Bauer I'd do it, preferably you'd want them to want Gregg over Russell (obviously).

The Sox might be more interested in a Garza + Russell deal, given the state of their bullpen and that they lost Andrew Miller.

Garza said its 50-50 that he signs an extension.

Not gonna happen.

If the Cubs don't receive good enough offers for him, I can see it happening.

I don't see them just letting him walk...and I doubt they take a return that they don't see as a good haul.

They won't let him walk for nothing, they'd make the qualifying offer and get someone's first round pick.

But they'll trade him. All of this is theater to gain leverage. It behooves Garza to play along because if he's traded, the team acquiring him won'd have option of the qualifying offer, meaning more teams would be more willing to bid for him in FA.

And in the end, Theo and Jed will almost certainly get a satisfactory return.

I still see it as unlikely that he's extended at this point, but I wont be upset if he does. All I care about is getting the best value - whether that's from a good extension, or (hopefully better-than-reported) prospects.

I'd like to see him extended, because that would mean it'd be a team friendly deal. But if he wants money, he'll take his chances with FA. It's a perfect situation for him, since he's not really an ace, but will be the best pitcher on the market and he'll get paid like one or close to it.

I like Garza a lot, but there's no way he'd be worth what some team will give him in FA. On top of his not being an ace, he has to be considered a significant injury risk at this point.

I like Danny Salazar quite a bit from the Indians. They're bringing him up to the majors for a start this week. He's got a FB that has hit triple digits and his secondary stuff is coming around this year. His main concern is a lack of innings in a single. If packaged with Tyler Naquin, I think I'd be OK with it. Hoping for a bigger name though as the headliner.

There's no reason we should do a package deal of Garza and Russell, though (barring a team with a good system saying pick the guys you want). Russell, on his own, is a very good trade chip.

If Russell can bring back a Sean Marshall type return in talent I don't think Theo & company will hesitate for a second.

They kinda have to.

Cecchini reminds me of Dave Magadan in the early 80's with the mets. Great contact / BA with anemic power. Magadan was 6-4 tall and 245 pounds. Has anyone seen Cecchini? The press release stats are usually fabrications.

Have to hesitate or have to pull the trigger? Because I'm going with the later. I get that Russell has far more time under team control, but he's simply not the guy that Marshall, who had established himself as an elite set up man was. Even if he could be , let's face it, Dale seemingly has no intention of using him as such.

At the time, Wood was 24 and already had two big league seasons under his belt. The first of which was a very good one, the second not as much, but not a disaster. At the time he looked like a guy who could easily be a cost effective 4 starter for several years. Torreyes was very well thought of and very young, and we could have done a lot worse then Sappelt as a 3rd piece. If we could get that return for Russell, I take it.
