Look, it's as simple as this:

Either you are scared that the player you sign is going to turn bad, in which case your reasoning for not wanting to sign him is that and has nothing to do with some A-ball prospect you are worried about "blocking."

Or it's that you are worried we might have two good players at the same time, which is something to be hoped for and not avoided.

I know I'd blow as a GM in today's market. Because I'd be scared any expensive free agent is going to turn bad, simply because I think most of the good ones already have been signed to long-term contracts.

I cringe at the thought of signing a B.J. Upton or Albert Pujols and paying them for their great years of production on their previous team....only to see them perform well below expectations on mine.

It's irrational, but that's why I hate high-end free agency. I'm much more comfortable doing what we have been doing the last few years, which is find some pretty solid middle guys who have a chance to exceed their contract.

sulley is this some kind of performance art or...

No, I am in love with Almora, really.

ehhh me too but he's a kid and he's hurt all the time. id rather fill that of spot and then deal with it if it turns out he's good

Of the Top 4 prospects, Almora is the furthest away and probably has the lowest ceiling. He's also an outfielder, which has the greatest potential for flexibility in moving guys while providing similar value. The only impact Almora should have on this offseason's decisions is if we're using him in a trade. Add one outfielder, add 5 outfielders, add multiple center fielders, the odds are too stacked against Almora(even with his skillset) being a guy you don't want "blocked" to have him influence what you do at the MLB level now.

Depends on payroll I guess. If we're prepared to ship Ellsbury off to NY and eat some salary if Almora remains healthy and tears up the upper levels, thats cool.

Totally off the subject, but when i saw kc in appleton, Vogelbach and Almora were goofing around playing long toss before signing, well, Almora signing at least. And Vogelbach threw this ball way too far and it was about to go into the stands and maybe hit some little autograph seekers, Almora does a Darryl Strawberry on the Simpsons impersonation and jumps about 4 feet off ghe ground to snag it. We were all just standing there gaping at him like we just saw superman.

Welp. Looks like some of the meatheads who were mad about this thread are eating crow.

Sveum isn't gone but he's certainly not safe.

I didn't realize questioning Sveum's job security less than a month into the season mostly because of the perceived mismanagement of an already God awful bullpen was the opposite of "meathead"

According to Mike Feinsand of New York Daily News, Girardi said something to the effect of. "If I manage next year, it'll be with Yankees".

Seems like that was just his impression and not a direct quote.

@FeinsandNYDN Listening to Girardi, it sounds like he'll either manage the Yankees or not manage at all.

My final guess is that tomorrow we learn Sveum keeps his job while Rowsen and Deer get fired. Not sure about Bell. The infield defense was good and he seems to work hard with the shifts, but he had some ill advised sends at 3rd base.

@CarrieMuskat Ricketts went into #Cubs clubhouse. Coaches Bell, Quirk are here

If they are firing Sveum and not committing anything extra to the payroll, I don't care if they bring Casey Stengel back from the dead, they aren't going to be successful. When the worst part about your manager is that his bullpen management sucks, it's probably time to start blaming the front office and ownership.

Certainly didn't do a piss poor job, what with the roster and expectations, but I could see the reasoning. Anyway he stays in the organization? If Girardi stays in NY, who would we target? The meatheads will complain we should have kept Sandberg.

This isn't about the W/L, it has to be about the lack of development from Castro/Rizzo. Or simply that they see a better long term option that won't be available next year. Or both.
