Yes, the sports world stands by with bated breath waiting for new articles about Anthony Rizzo and Andrew Cashner, two of the most dynamic and talked-about figures in the sport of baseball today.

Only remotely justifiable reason I can come up with is the contract.

~6 win player for 7/64 or ~8 win player for 2/30, not all that difficult a decision

That's if you already buy Rizzo as a 6 win player. Stanton has much more of an established (albeit injured) elite track record.

I reminded myself not to get too carried away with that when I saw those threads from 2012 linked and Castro was on pace for like a 6 WAR season in late May.

Stanton doesn't have a baseline of anywhere near his current production either. Five years is an eternity(especially at the AAV), they aren't close in trade value.

Trout has a ton more defensive value but the same tiny face.

To me the list starts and ends with Trout.

I'd consider Chris Sale, Yordano Ventura, Jose Fernandez, Carlos Gomez, Josh Donaldson, Yasiel Puig, Anthony Rendon, and Andrew McCutchen, but probably wouldn't pull the trigger on anyone besides Trout.

This is a very odd list. I wouldn't consider any of those guys. Maaaaaaaybe Mccutchen. We have Rizzo locked up through 2021 making nothing!

Sale has an even more team friendly contract than Rizzo, Ventura/Fernandez are monsters not even arbitration eligible yet, Gomez is probably a stretch and will get paid soon, Donaldson isn't making any money, Puig has a similar contract to Rizzo, Rendon is very young. I don't think any of them would be an immediate no with the possible exception of Gomez and probably Fernandez solely due to the injury.

If there ever were a player this cold calculated front office team would not trade it would be Rizzo. Rizzo is their baby. At least until his final contract year.

Puig is a pretty obvious choice.

Puig has a .369 BABIP with just a 13.9 LD% and his wOBA is still lower than Rizzo.

Rizzo, in contrast, has a .317 BABIP and a 23.7 LD%.

3.0 fWAR for both.

Rizzo is locked up longer for (very) slightly less money.

Fair enough. I might argue that a team with more money to spend would value the contract less, but for that to really be true the gap in their production would have to be much greater still, I'd think.

The BABIP doesn't bother me. Guys like Trout, McCutchen and Puig are going to have high BABIPs due to their skillset.
