Heyman says the Astros are now offering $5 million to Aiken.

If I'm Aiken I take it. Sure it's not 6.5M, but that isn't a huge discount for a guy whose future looks to be bound for Tommy John.

Yeah, he definitely should take it but my UCLA fandom is pretty selfish so I'm rooting for him to get to campus (and somehow screw up the amount of remaining funds available for Jacob Nix so Nix also ends up at UCLA despite agreeing to financial terms already).

I'd rather not give Houston another top 2 pick next year.

Why? They keep [expletive] them up anyway.

At one point I envied the Astros.

In 2005?

It might have been early 2013. I mean Correa is def a better talent than Almora. So I was envying the fact they were in my mind, doing the rebuild better. Absolute tanking getting the #1 pick. Now though, our 2013 pick is better than theirs, and well at least our 2014 pick is playing and not a HS pitcher facing a year + setback with possible tommy john. 13 and 14 have been really good for us. Capped off by acquiring Russel.

I'm so glad the Astros exist so there's a tanking team I can actively root against and glory in their compounding failures.

What about the Mets?

Nobody outside of New York remembers they still exist.

Because they may get it right eventually, or they may take a pitcher someone else wanted who then moves down their board and takes the hitter we want.

SI is going to have an awesome longform in 5 years when we're about to win our first world series and the astros are winning 65 games and still rebuilding. unbelievable

I know it's not going to happen, but part of me really wants Rodon to completely stiff the White Sox.

Rumor has it he's about to sign for more than $6.5M. Between that, Kolek's $6M bonus, and Aiken's whole situation I'm pretty happy with Schwarber (currently sporting a .432/.510/.864 line across two levels) for $3.125M.

Astros have dropped their offer to Aiken to $3.2m, the minimum they can offer to have the pick rollover if he doesn't sign, on reportedly "significant abnormality" in his MRI.

Technically they offered that just to ensure they get a compensation pick (that's the minimum they must offer for a comp pick). His adviser rips the Astros: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/casey-close-calls-foul-on-astros-and-mlb-in-negotiations-with-no-1-draft-pick-brady-aiken-071414

There have been similar articles in local San Diego (Aiken) and LA (Nix) papers in the past week, though without Close's quotes. Probably at least partially just normal contract negotiations but a lot of the complaints against the Astros have come out in the past.

Brady Aiken's advisor, Casey Close, criticized both the Astros and MLB for the way the team has handled negotiations with the 2014 No. 1 overall pick.

The Astros are said to be using a medical concern, specifically about an abnormality with Aiken's elbow ligament, to leverage him into accepting a lower bonus. This would enable them two of their other draft picks. The two sides initially agreed to a $6.5 million bonus, but their revised offer now sits at $3,168,840, the minimum amount required to ensure that they would receive the No. 2 pick in 2015 as compensation if they fail to sign Aiken. "We are extremely disappointed that Major League Baseball is allowing the Astros to conduct business in this manner with a complete disregard for the rules governing the draft and the 29 other clubs who have followed those same rules," said Close.

The Astros are trying to sign Mac Marshall, Casey Close knows it too. He was hitting 97 his last start. The Astros gave Mengden close to 500k with a fractured back.

I hope he doesn't sign and MLB makes him a FA.

oh shut up Casey. If he's got a bum elbow, they shouldnt have to pay him slot. Take the money or send the kid to UCLA and let him "try for more" after 3 yrs in college and a TJS. Pretty simple.
