I'm not 100% positive, but since he doesn't truly sign a contract, he can go to college. Would really suck for him since then it's multiple years til he can get that payday.

He could go the JUCO route and be eligible again next year. I'm not sure of the transfer rules in college baseball, but I think he can leave/not enroll at UCLA, go directly to a JUCO/CC and be eligible again the following year.

Not positive, but even with a failed physical, I think the Astros are required to offer him 40% of slot regardless. Their value was a tad over 7.9 mill, if there were an injury of any sort, it'd be awfully tough for Aiken to turn down 3.5 mill when all is said and done.

I thought I've seen it somewhere that Astros has to offer 40% of slot in order to get a comp pick next year (2nd pick next year and assuming Aiken wouldn't take the 3.16 mil offer). I don't think it's required though. If they didn't, they lose the slot money/5% overage/etc this year AND no comp pick next year so it's incredibly stupid if Astros didn't offer the 40%.

That makes sense. Still, at 3.1 mill, I'm not so sure Aiken could turn that down. Top 10 money for a pitcher......It's not his ideal scenario obviously, but it's a pretty nice chunk.

Yes, this happened to Matt Krook last year.

Don't get my hopes up, guys.

Awesome to get him in. Unless someone signs for 115k or so, we're done. Was hopeful we'd find a way to get Deppermann, but getting Cease is a coup.

Heyman is reporting that Aiken has an elbow ligament issue, and that the Astros are trying to work out a discounted deal with him. Yikes.

Ok Brady, head to Westwood and get more money three years from now. Just like Gerrit Cole, Trevor Bauer and probably James Kaprielian.

Would we have taken him if he fell to us? I know we supposedly had Appel-Bryant 1-2

There was some mention about how Aiken was 1 and Schwarber was 2 this year, but I don't know how much of that(the Bryant/Schwarber at 2 or the Appel/Aiken at 1) to take at face value, especially in light of the TINSTAPP 4 lyfe deal this past week.

I kind of think no. They seem pretty adamant about taking elite bats whenever possible, and I would bet they had another bat in mind when the selection was still in doubt.

I'm pretty sure Hoyer is on record saying Schwarber was 2nd on their board, meaning one of those 3 pitchers was higher and everything pointed to it being Aiken. The Astros appear to have bailed us out twice now and we should send them an edible arrangement.

Being on record saying it doesn't mean it is true.

Between this new Aiken situation and the well documented and terrifying risks that Rodon carries, I'm game for just ignoring pitching in the 1st round on a permanent basis unless Strasburg/Price is available. Should be fun to watch the Cub Facebook fans freakout when Theoyer takes another bat in the top 5 next year.

What is his motivation to say the guy they drafted wasn't the guy they liked best?

Not letting the industry know how you evaluate players. If you make it seem like you actually strongly consider drafting a pitcher early even when you actually have no interest in doing that, they can't be certain that you are going to take the college bat every time. Maybe instead of all the injuries this year hurting the Cubs since they would have taken one of them, they actually welcomed the news to give them an excuse to draft a college bat that was ranked lower by most.

You think if they said Bryant was their #1 choice all along that somebody ahead of them would've taken Schwarber instead?

If you're talking in terms of trades, they've certainly done a poor job of hiding their intentions in their comments on the Shark/Hammel trade.

Heyman says the Astros are now offering $5 million to Aiken.

If I'm Aiken I take it. Sure it's not 6.5M, but that isn't a huge discount for a guy whose future looks to be bound for Tommy John.

At one point I envied the Astros. But it looks like our rebuild is going a lot better than theirs now. Jesus. Appel stinking, their next #1 pick needing TJ? Jesus again.

And Correa is out the rest of the year with a broken fibula

SI is going to have an awesome longform in 5 years when we're about to win our first world series and the astros are winning 65 games and still rebuilding. unbelievable
