Sean Jensen says Bears want Marinelli to stay, but that Marinelli may not want to.

The Bears are going to have to offer serious extensions to the staff they want to keep on. There has to be payback for forcing them to avoid interviews these past few weeks.

i'm sure he'll have an effect on personnel just like lovie had an effect on personnel.

Lovie's effect on personnel decisions did not come into play as much until after he made it to the Super Bowl.

New GM, no idea how Emery will handle this.

I think guys could've gotten interview permission if they wanted to badly enough, or if there was interest. Marinelli is under contract, so the Bears could force the issue, but that may not be ideal, obviously.

i don't think so. lovie had a huge effect o how that d-line was put together, including the tommie harris and tank johnson picks. it was a complete 180 from the jauron era.

That was more of an influence in what type of player they needed, not the actual individuals taken. They needed a DT to run the defense. The key is the personnel people selecting the right one. Trestman has been out of the NFL for 8 years, he's not going to be the one selecting offensive linemen.

Well, by all accounts they specifically said their assistants under contract were not allowed to interview, with the exception of Toub since he was given a HC interview with the team, wasn't going to get it, and apparently they wanted to replace him with DeCamillas anyway.

What are you basing this on? He's the head coach of an NFL team. The assertion that he won't have a high amount of input on who is/isn't on his team is completely foolish.

I'd offer a serious extension to Marinelli and the DB coach. If Babich wants to force his way out thats fine. Not sure about anyone else, but the DB coach is the only guy I've ever heard about being a candidate for promotion, although if there was an actual opportunity for a DC promotion I'm sure Emery would have let him go, and still would. If Marinelli stays it shouldn't matter too much for the other D coaches.

I'm basing it on his complete lack of exposure to top football talent for the past 8 years, the fact that he's a new head coach and working for an organization that has made it clear the GM will make personnel decisions while the coach will coach. Trestman will make decisions about the final roster when it's time to cut guys, but Emery will be the one bringing in the talent.

And the Ogun trade.

I just want to point out how often Golden Gophers are successful with the Bears. There really was only one: Nagurski. Will Trestman be a Bronko or will he be a Spaeth?

You should write for CBS sports.

I don't share your pessimism about the Trestman hire, but I agree on this. Emery will be taking care of the personnel. Trestman will stick to coaching.

to imply he's not going to have a huge say in it is wrong.

I really don't like that Trestman has that lame website. But I find this amusing.

"I think he's like Bill Walsh, because he's one of those guys that you want to go out and lay it on the line for. He is totally committed, and players are going to want to play for a guy like that!" – Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice

The words came at a news conference in January announcing a new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. A reporter asked owner Eddie DeBartolo about Marc Trestman.

''He's gone,'' DeBartolo replied.

And somewhere, Jerry Rice smiled. Real, real big.

Because if there was anything Rice - the NFL's best wide receiver ever - wanted to hear this past off-season, it was that Trestman - Rice's least favorite offensive coordinator ever - was to be out of a job.

''I caught a lot of balls, but it was not a fun year for me,'' said Rice, the NFL's all-time leader in touchdowns, yards receiving and career receptions, who is expected to play extensively in the first half tomorrow night when the Jaguars play the 49ers at 3Com Park in San Francisco in a preseason game. ''I had some doubts in my mind. I was saying, 'Jerry, you've been here for a long time. Maybe it's time to leave, move on.' ''

The main problem was how Trestman used Rice, as a possession receiver, an inexplicable tactic for one of the NFL's top deep threats. Trestman's explanation was the 49e

There have been a ton of head coaches in the NFL who came in without exposure to top football talent for long periods of time. To assume that they won't be heavily involved in personnel doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Emery said that he will make the final personnel decisions. No [expletive], he's the GM. But he also said that he's going to use a hybrid model of coaching staff grades, scouting grades, and 3rd party stats when making decisions. Trestman will be involved.

That doesn't jive with what Tim Brown said a bit ago on ESPN 1000. Brown didn't like Trestman because he made Rice the #1 receiver over Brown, who thought he was better at that point.

Sounds like there was some serious WR ego issues going on there.

I'm not implying it, I'm saying it.

Trestman will not have a huge say on the specific players brought in. His scheme will effect which way Emery goes, and in August he will be the one making decisions on whether to cut guys or not, but he won't be Bill Parcells shopping for his own groceries, a post-Super Bowl Lovie getting specific names he wants.

If the offensive line is going to be "reformed" it is going to have to come from personnel men making the right decisions on offensive lineman that are not currently in the organization.

the fact that jerry rice was upset that he felt he was used incorrectly doesn't mean that he was used incorrectly. i find those comments irrelevant because they are about him not liking his personal role, not the fact that the role was actually effective.

Who? NFL coaches are either assistant NFL coaches or coaches of very good major college teams, who are very good because they have NFL caliber talent moving on to the next level.

It's almost refreshing that Trestman isn't a players coach after Lovie
