Starlin Castro replacement? STARLIN CASTRO REPLACEMENT? Does this guy even [expletive] watch any baseball? Maybe we could find a half assed player as an Anthony Rizzo replacement. Hey maybe some teams 20th best prospect could be a Travis Wood replacement? Some times I think these idiots live in opposite land. Where you are trying to get rid of outstanding core players and replace them with crap.

Granted we're stacked with high ceiling middle infielders, but if nobody is willing to part with top young pitching, we should aiming for the best prospects we can get, regardless of position, and this guy being in the Top 50s 2 years in a row, so he could be it. The position's just a plus. He can forget about the whole Castro replacement, but perhaps an offensive upgrade over Barney or use him in a package for something bigger.

Problem is ... Segura's not really a big offensive upgrade over Barney (as Raisin already noted). A bit better, perhaps, and he does offer more base running ability, but I really don't see the point of taking Segura back in this type of deal unless that is absolutely the best possible offer (I mean, if Dempster is amenable to a deal, you have to move him and collect assets. Heck, the way it sounds, Dempster might be open to coming back in the winter.

I'd much rather take some high upside gambles than Segura. Torreyes will hit AA next year, and I think I'd take Torreyes over Segura.

I like Dave Cameron, but this one seems wacky. I'd rather take a gamble on Ethan Martin or say, Angel Sanchez, from the Dodgers instead of Segura (would hope for better, just noting that there are a lot of options I'd prefer over Segura).

This is starting to remind me of the deadline when the rumors we that the Cubs were trading Sosa to the Yankees. (Either 00 or 01) It seemed like that was the biggest rumor for weeks and was always on the verge. But after the deadline he was still here. Don't think that will happen this time, team appears completely committed to a total rebuild, but the waiting is driving me crazy.

If they don't want Dempster to crowd Garza's market they better do it damn soon. I don't think 3 days between them is enough distance to not effect eachother.

Soriano and Drew Henson were both mentioned in that trade for Sosa that never happened.

Funny, I just pulled up an old Buster Olney article about this. Back in June of 2000.

There's nothing wrong with being patient. The primary risk you run is that the player you're looking to deal gets injured before you can make the deal. But if they've got several bidders out there, the best case scenario is to let the bidding get as high as it possibly can before pulling the trigger.

The other problem is more pitchers becoming available. as far as the Cards go, Tyrell Jenkins and John Gast would be an excellent return for Dempster.

You assume that other teams are run by idiots who don't understand that more pitchers than the ones being dangled in front of them are available.

I think that there are some teams that truly haven't decided what they're doing yet. I doubt the Marlins know yet. Tampa could decide either direction evidently.

Do you think there is any chance that Ryan Dempster will be the only pitcher available?

BA had a nice story up today (premium) on Martin. Mentioned the mental stuff and also how much his slider has progressed. Still has great stuff, has a better game plan on the mound and is very athletic. I really would like him as a second arm in some sort of Gould + 2nd arm trade that has been suggested by some.

Of course not. I think if not for his injury, he'd already be gone.

So was Lilly, IIRC. Soriano, Lilly, Ledee, and a minor leaguer or two I think was the deal before it got cancelled at the last minute.

Brett over at Bleacher Report Nation says he has a good source that says a deal is "very close" and speculates that the Cubs are weighing between two offers.

I'll bet 8 billion imaginary internet dollars that this gets done tonight.

@jaysonst ‪#Cubs‬ still working to trade Ryan Dempster ASAP. One source says Red Sox are officially out on Dempster, still in on Matt Garza

I'm not sure it can be considered rushing when you've been actively shopping him for weeks, if not months. And I don't think it's rushing for the sake of rushing, in so much as rushing for the sake that his value is never going to be higher than it currently is.

I don't think Lilly was involved... Westbrook was the big pitcher the Cubs demanded and Alex Graman. The Yanks offered Ledee, the Cubs wanted he and OF Jackson Melian IIRC. The sticking point and the reason the Yanks walked away is because the Cubs demanded their top two positional guys Alfonso Soriano and DeAngelo Jimenez and the Yanks told the Cubs either or.

Yanks offered: 1 of Soriano/Jimenez, Ricky Ledee, Jackson Melian and Jake Westbrook

Cubs demanded: Alfonso Soriano, DeAngelo Jimenez, Ricky Ledee, Jackson Melian and Jake Westbrook

I don't think the Yanks ever made Drew Henson available at least I remember thinking that the Cubs were resigned to the fact that they weren't going to acquire Henson.
