Jurrjens is getting lit up tonight, Delgado was just sent down, and Teheran has looked bad recently in AAA. If I'm holding out hope for someone, it's Delgado or Teheran for Dempster, or maybe the pair and Salcedo for Garza. But Atlanta can't be happy with the chances their rotation holds up. Sheets may not make it out of July and they're counting on him.

I think I like Owens more than anything the dodgers are going to offer. A lefty with a crazy K rate makes me irrationally happy.

I'm drawing a blank, and maybe I missed something a couple pages ago, but... Owens? Who are you referring to?

I'd be plenty happy with Henry Owens as the key piece in a Dempster deal, but I'd hope we could get a solid 2nd piece, assuming the market for Dempster is as strong as suggested, considering how far away he is. Not a top prospect, but perhaps a lottery ticket (I guess, another lottery ticket in some respects, as Owens is still more hope than not), or a decent upper level piece.

How much [expletive] chicken are they going to play here? Bad starts, injury possibilities, other players entering trade market, teams falling out of the race.....This needs to get done NOW.

Yeah, let's just trade him for Rick Porcello or some Orioles starter with 800 bad major league starts who was a good prospect 8 years ago.

Nah, I don't want to deal him for scraps, but if Gould and Withrow is already on the table, same with Crosby and another piece from Detroit, I'm pulling the trigger, instead of holding out for a bit more. That said, Padilla made it sound like we're trying to get Lee from the Dodgers. So, if that's the case, I guess it's worth holding out for a bit.

Wow if we got Lee I'd [expletive] myself. I highly doubt it though. Dammit dude don't get my hopes up. I can't take this wait anymore.
Posted
Nah, it'd be a massive overpay and they need a bat much more than an arm anyeay, so I keep telling myself if Lee gets dealt, that's what it'd be for. Surely Kasten would put a stop to Ned sending Lee to us. But, I can see Theo making sure that's the case, before agreeing to less. I'm just impatient, if they're waiting it out, they've got a reason as to why.

IMO, Theo is dragging his feet waiting for a 2nd team to seriously enter the bidding, because right now the Dodgers act like they're just bidding against themselves. Perhaps they are. The reports have been that they've been the heavy favorite for a trade possibility for upwards of 2-3 months.

I'm quite sure there is more than one team seriously bidding.

I think the fact that Dempster can choose where he wants to go gets overlooked a bit. If the Dodgers know that's where he wants to end up, they don't necessarily have to offer the best package.

Plus, Dempster has supposedly only told the Cubs of a few teams he didn't want to go to. So, it doesn't really give the Dodgers a lot of leverage.

Ideally, you'd get Gould and a guy to gamble on, but tbh, I'd be fine with Gould alone. I'd hope for more, obviously, but Gould for a couple months of Dempster would seem fine. I think I'd be fine with Gould or Webster as individual returns for Dempster. Again, hope for more, but an intriguing upper level arm with mid-rotation potential for a couple months of Dempster seems solid to me. A notch below that group would be guys like Angel Sanchez, Aaron Miller, Ethan Martin, Chris Withrow. If they had positive scouting reports on these guys, I wouldn't be averse to taking a couple of them (well, I'm not all that enthused with Withrow, but I figured I'd throw him in there ... the other three I can see borderline ability as starters, Withrow I think is definitely a pen arm). Ethan Martin has sort of become the forgotten man, and while he hasn't had a great season, he's had an intriguing season where the stuff/ability to be a starter has occasionally shown through. He's had two months were the control was fine, and two months (April/June) where he walked too many (April was highlighted, though, by a 7 walk start). Not sure how I feel about Chris Reed. A part of me would lump him with Gould/Webster, but another part of me still wonders about him as a starter (and namely, what his ceiling as a starter is).

If we get Lee, that'd be beautiful, but I doubt it.

I still like Ethan Martin quite a bit.

I understood why he fell off the radar last year ... but I think people are almost missing the fact that he's having a fairly intriguing season as a starter. He might not stay a starter, but there's a lot to like about what he's done, and if the reports are to be believed, he's mentally stronger this year, which might've been a big issue in his past.

Didn't see this one in here yet, from Dave Cameron via ESPN Insider. Pure opinion piece.

"Trade No 3: Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster to Los Angeles Angels for shortstop/second baseman Jean Segura

While the Los Angeles Dodgers have been heavily connected to Dempster, it's the other Los Angeles franchise that should swoop in and get him. With Dan Haren still on the DL and Ervin Santana struggling, the Angels need another reliable starter, and Dempster would slide in perfectly as another strikethrower who misses bats.

Segura is a middle-infield prospect who was aced out of a future in Anaheim when the team gave contract extensions to Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick, so his role in the organization is now as a trade chip. He got off to a slow start in Double-A but has heated up as of late and would offer the Cubs a potential Starlin Castro replacement or an offensive upgrade over Darwin Barney."

I'm not sure Segura would provide better offensive production than Darwin Barney.

Dave Cameron is starting to really annoy me.

Agreed, on all levels. Considering the Cubs are apparently asking for a top 50 guy not sure how Segura meets the asking price. It's also not clear how Segura meets the Cubs stated desire for pitching or 3rd base.

When a guy has a .743 OPS in the Texas League, you can't let him slip away.

I'm sure finding an average player in Double A to be a Starlin Castro replacement is quite high on Theo's list of things to do along with what he's looking for as a return for Dempster.....
