Feel free to add the Nationals to the race if you hadn't already.

The Nationals do not intend to allow right-hander Stephen Strasburg reach his innings limit without an alternate plan.

The team is exploring trades for starting pitchers, including Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster, according to major-league sources.

The Nats system is OK. But they don't rwally have the more midlevelish type arms I kind of suspect Dempster brings back. Meaning top 10 system guys. I'd take Alex Meyer straight up for him, it's a solid value. But I doubt Washington would do it. He's about the only arm they've got at this point.

An exec of one team talking to the #Cubs said today they're working hard to move Ryan Dempster "by the end of the week."

FWIW

Here's hoping this spurs them to make a move:

David Ortiz (Achilles) told Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com on Tuesday that he is "in a lot of pain."

"They already did the MRI, and the doctors will give me the results this afternoon," said Ortiz. "I don't have anything broken, but I'm in a lot of pain, and the heel is swollen." Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said after Monday's game that he was hopeful the veteran slugger would only have to miss a few days, but Ortiz's comments aren't very promising.

Why would that spur them to make a pitching move?

They need help all over the place. They should be looking for production wherever they can get it.

Just listened to Levine on ESPN 1000 (online). He said he expected Dempster to make his next start as a Cub and the process to take another week to 10 days.

:banghead:

If that's true I'm getting fired. . .

Edit:

Meanwhile ESPN Rumor Central says this:

The pace has picked up on the Ryan Dempster trade rumors, but the right-hander's no-trade clause puts the ball in his court.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com writes that Dempster prefers the Los Angeles Dodgers first and foremost and then the Atlanta Braves. Rosenthal cites Dempster's friendship with Dodgers lefty Ted Lilly, suggesting the reason for his preference. Dempster also knows Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski well from their days in Florida, making the Detroit Tigers a possibility.

Earlier Tuesday, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark tweeted that the Cubs were looking to move Dempster by the end of the week, so something could pop at any point.

How much [expletive] chicken are they going to play here? Bad starts, injury possibilities, other players entering trade market, teams falling out of the race.....This needs to get done NOW.

Levine Talked like it was other teams' indecision over who they want that was holding it up.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers have "by far" shown the strongest interest in Ryan Dempster.

Most have considered them the favorites to land him for a while now. ESPN's Jayson Stark reported earlier Tuesday that the Cubs were trying to deal Dempster before the end of the week, so it's very possible his next start will be in a Dodgers uniform. The Braves, Tigers, Nationals and Red Sox have also reportedly show interest in the veteran righty.

Maybe there's more available than what we know. But there are supposedly two standing offers out there, you'd think a team would go ahead and address a need and move on to the next one. At any rate, our guys are tight lipped, maybe Levine's just wanting to be different than what everyone else has said today.....

Exactly. If the Cubs want the best possible price, they have to be willing to wait until other teams have to pull the trigger. Right now, teams have nothing to lose by medium-balling the Cubs and waiting for one of the other pitchers on the market.
