Ok, looking over Sappelt's minor league numbers I'm starting to like him more than before. A .309/.362/.459 career line dragged down by a .726 OPS season in 2009. Other than that struggling 2009, he's posted OPS' of .850, .902, and .834 in the minors.

The IsoD leaves a bit to be desired and the BB rate isn't great (7%), but he's put up some pretty nice numbers and hasn't been in the PCL doing it.

Torreyes is the high upside prospect I wanted in the deal, so that officially makes me very happy with the trade. To me, Torreyes is the key and Wood is the icing on the cake.

This trade is pretty encouraging.

It kind of sucks for us in the short term, but I can totally get behind a total video game rebuild like I would do on OOTP or something. I WANT YOUR MINOR LEAGUERS, ALL OF THEM

Posted

So

One year of a really great relief pitcher

for

A 25-year-old starting pitcher with one year of service time, a career 92 FIP- and no health concerns

A 24-year-old outfielder who is right on the borderline between being a starter and a good fourth outfielder

An 18-year-old prospects who projects to stay at 2b with plus defense who just hit .356 .398 .457 in the Midwest League.

If this is what rebuilding looks like, sign me up.

Yeah, I'm still frustrated that we're giving up on at least 1-2 seasons for apparently no good reason, but if this is the kind of trade success we can look forward to I can live with it.

Good lord, this makes me wonder how much they can milk some team out of for Garza. To get a cheap, cost controlled lefty, a decent cost controlled 4th OF type with potential AND a borderline top 100 prospect for one year of Marshall? I was basically OK with Wood as the main piece, after thinking about it, but damn. This is a home run now.

Sappelt has to be breaking camp with the team, imo. He and Reed Johnson make up the reserve outfielders.

I'd still prefer Sappelt, Campana, and $1+ million rather than Sappelt and Reed, but I agree that Sappelt almost has to break camp with us.

Not even, though. Even in the short term, it's not like Marshall's value is much greater than Wood's.

And yea, definitely agree on the second part...only I'd be doing it on baseball mogul.

Agreed. At first blush this reminds me of Slocumb for Lowe and Varitek, or Anderson for Bagwell.

Problem is that we didnt have to give them up and still don't. Hell, if we keep our current pitching in tact and pick up even someone like Pena, Kotchman, Loney, or Barton we could still have a fighting chance to back door into the playoffs without increasing payroll by much at all. I know it's a huge if, but if we resigned Pena for 1st and bat him 4th and if Castro could manage to take his success at the 2, 5, and 6 spots to the 3 spot all of the sudden we'd have a respectable team. Oh yeah, Cespedes would sure be nice too. DeJesus, Cespedes, Castro, Pena, Soto, Jackson, Stewart, 2nd baseman would be at least a balanced lineup. We could trade Byrd for whatever we can get, maybe Soriano too and if it doesn't work out, we could probably trade Garza next year or this summer and probably get just as much as we'd get right now.

That would not come remotely close to the playoffs unless Ian Stewart hit 40 home runs and came in 2nd in MVP voting to Starlin Castro.

Now I'm really looking forward to the Garza trade.

That's what I was just thinking. I've also been wondering to myself whether we shouldn't offload as many veterans as possible, but extend Garza and build the rotation around him.

At this point we have to give up on the seasons - there's just no way to put together a competitive team for 2012 and it'd be pretty hard to come up with one for 2013 without investing a ton of money. I guess maybe we'd have a chance to backdoor our way in by signing Prince, giving Jackson a (likely) silly contract, and adding Cespedes and him doing really well on the ML team.

Basically, though, we're committed to this 2+ year rebuilding process, so I'll just sit back and enjoy awesome rebuild trades like this one.

Is this the year they add the 2 spare wild cards or next? There are massive ifs in the form of Zambrano, Dempster, Stewart, Jackson, and DeJesus but if all works out we could at least enjoy the season.

Recent moves by the Cards (Berkman and Beltran), Brewers (Ramirez) and Reds (trading all their prospects) indicate that they see their windows over the next couple of years. Maybe it makes a ton of sense for us to target a 2014 contention as the field will be less crowded.

Yeah, my ideal scenario is a get a blow away package or just lock him up and build around Castro & Garza.

Wait, Sappelt played *CF* in the minors??? I assumed he was a corner outfielder.

This just keeps getting better.

How likely is he to stick there?

If the link from last page is to be believed, he's anywhere from good to awesome as a center fielder, with the arm to play all 3 spots.

That just makes this trade all the better, then. Wood is starting to look more like a throw-in than the centerpiece he was originally pegged to be.

I don't know. Signing Prince then trading Garza this offseason and then buying two top shelf pitchers next offseason could make this team very competitive in 2013. I'm not sure you could convince Fielder to sign, but if you could, that would allow the Cubs to use the return from Garza to fill other needs.

It doesn't seem too likely a scenario based upon what we've seen to date, but I do think that it could work.
