yeah, whatever to this. he's a below average player at 3rd.

unlike the other cheap available options, he surely has the potential for more

today's moves make me wonder why Theo hasn't dismissed Wilken; three recent very high picks of his he's let go without pause

he does fill a hole if he can provide some power.

we're going to need a lot of it, a lot.

It would be reasonable to think he could give us 25 HR over 500 or so PA. Or he could flame out.

I wonder if the posting of Darvish is what the Cubs were waiting on to pull the trigger on Stewart? By going relatively cheap at 3B, I'd think they go heavy after one of Darvish/Fielder.

I'm not sure that really has anything to do with it, because I don't think we had a realistic option for 3rd that was going to be expensive. At least not since we decided against bringing Aramis back, which was very early in the process.

My personal feeling is that the Cubs moved on Stewart because something happened to reduce their chances at Headley, or because the Padres were asking for too much.

I thought they'd wait until after the non-tender deadline, though.

I think it's a fair trade, but we gave up two young, high draft picks for an unproven guy. No way most GM's would do that if it was their system who drafted those players.

Actually, O'Dowd did this exact thing in this very deal. He took both Stewart and Weathers in the 1st round.

True, but contrast what O'Dowd gave up to what we gave up: Weathers had TJ surgery, and in 2 years has yet to bounce back from it. Stewart is making too much money to keep around if he's not going to start. IMO, that's very different from two guys with options left making close to the minimum salary.

I like the trade, though, as I didn't think LeMahieu's skill set would be much more valuable than a Ryan Theriot and Colvin should have been a 2nd-4th round pick anyway (although his power was worth keeping around for another year IMO).

I remember Theo from the winter meetings talking about how things aren't seen as big or small sometimes, when you first sign them. Then he goes on to talk about Ortiz, Millar, etc. .

I think Theo honestly thinks, or atleast wants, Stewart to be his "Ortiz of the Cubs". How likely that will happen who knows, they obviously scouted the guy. Maybe he'll be targeting a few other guys like this and hopes one of them is lightning in a bottle.

This is one of those wait and see deals. Can't really judge it at all now. It's clear Theo's looking to stockpile a couple buy low guys and see if one can hit, though.

You do realize that Weathers and Stewart were both higher draft picks than Colvin and LeMahieu and that 3 of the 4 guys are all the same age and all 4 are essentially unproven. Colvin and Stewart are both getting a change of scenery, although I don't know how much playing time Colvin will get if the Rockies sign Cuddyer in addition to Car Go, Fowler, and Smith.

Remember the whole "theo finds hidden value so let's trust him to make moves that on the surface seem crazy"?

The people who are down on this are acting like its a Hendry move. Look I'm probably taking the "sit back and blindly trust any move theo makes" but at the same time, this is move #2 and some people think the cubs have had a disasterous offseason it feels like.

Glad we're acting like a major market team this winter

things are going to get real freaking dire when somebody bids 65m to talk to darvish

Connor Glassey said Weathers was hitting 97 with a nasty slider in the AFL. Maybe we were impressed by him? Guess so, anyway.

Because when you're a major market team, a move's not worth making unless it costs you 25 mil.

And even if by this time next year Stewarts in Japan and Weathers is in Iowa chances are Colvin will be on the same flight as Stewart and LeMahieu will still be a scrappy little white guy with mild pop.

For some reason I'm pretty optimistic about this. Stewart/Baker platoon?

Anyone look at Baker's splits by month last year? I know AVG is not anyone's favorite stat, but man!

April/March - .364

May - .375

June - .179

July - .208

August - .192

Sept/Oct - .200

This is without looking into it, I would guess he started the year facing mostly LHP. I seem to remember as the year went on and guys got hurt/sucked he started getting more ab's against RHP, which he sucks against, and it dragged his avg down.

Stewart is the one guy in this trade that can wind up an All Star. No, it's not likely. But, all it takes is one of these type moves to work out and we've got ourselves a bigtime bargain. I like this type of gamble on a young guy much more than Hendry's MO of signing older guys coming off injuries at least. It's a small move in an offseason that may have many. Let's see what else happens.

This is how I see it. I'd rather have had Headley, but it's far from a total loss.
