Reading ChicagoCubsOnline, their recap of Bowden on XM today was that if Theo and Jed were offered BOTH Turner and Castellanos, as part of a package, they wouldn't turn it down. Dombrowski hasn't made up his mind as to whether or not he wants to offer that much.

I'm not sure if that is inside info or just someone making an obvious assumption.

I'm not quite sure what's going on, but it could be that this thing is back to where it had been for the past few weeks.Or maybe they've just been quietly moving along in the negotiations ever since trying to work more of our players into it.Just waiting for Garza to be spotted in a Vegas bar singing Detroit Rock City.

Jason Beck of MLB.com was told by a source that "there’s nothing going on" with the Tigers in regard to a trade for the Cubs' Matt Garza.

Futhermore, Peter Gammons said Tuesday night on MLB Network that "it’s not going to happen." It's believed that prospect right-hander Jacob Turner would have been the centerpiece of the proposed deal, but it appears the Tigers could go into the season with him as their fifth starter. The Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Marlins are among the other clubs who have expressed interest in Garza this offseason.

I have very little doubt that Turner is in play. My scenario for getting the best package for Garza goes something like this: Boston signs Kuroda, Edwin Jackson signs with whoever gives him the most money(maybe Baltimore) and then Detroit, Toronto, and the Yanks are left to up their offers. It'd be great if Darvish fell through as well, but I think that's asking too much. In the end though, with the risk of Garza not having as good of a season as 2011, plus the idea that the new CBA will start to change the value of prospects some, I think he'll be gone well before the season starts, at this point.

I started to blame the media for feeding into the fantasy that some team is going to severely overpay for our assets. Then I remembered the Marshall trade and that there are some really dumb GMs out there.

Could we get the Reds interested in Garza? I know their rotation is full, but is it Dustyproof?

Is there anything left to get after the Latos and Marshall trades?

Not really. Mesoraco's excellent, but he's their catcher very soon. We've got Torreyes, so Hamilton doesn't make sense. Corcino's it, after that. Not nearly enough.

Cubs president of baseball of operations Theo Epstein said Wednesday that the the club is not attempting to shop Matt Garza.

We heard otherwise earlier this week, though various reports shot down rumors of talks with the Tigers. While Epstein is saying they aren't shopping him, we suspect they would deal him if a club meets their lofty asking price. Garza, 28, is under team control through 2013 and figures to make between $8-9 million via the arbitration process this winter.

I tend not to believe a word of this

Shopping implies actively asking others what they'd offer for him. Listening to offers or even negotiating is not actively shopping. So it's probably true but not at all in conflict with reports over the last couple weeks.

I think there's a clear distinction between shopping guys and listening to offers. I think the Cubs shopped Marshall, and when a team knows they aren't going to keep a pending free agent, they will shop him. But the Cubs made it clear early on (remember Peter Gammons insisting Garza would eventually be dealt back in November?) they would listen on Garza but aren't necessarily shopping him.

ESPN insider doesn't say anything, they just collect rumors based on reports of other sites, all stories we've heard.

The buzz about a possible deal that would send Matt Garza to the Detroit Tigers appears to have cooled significantly.

David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com wrote earlier this week that the Cubs are "down the road" in discussions with the Tigers to send Garza to Detroit for a package of prospects.

Theo Epstein, tweets Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, says the clubs is not shopping Garza, and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, however, cautioned Tuesday that no Garza trade is imminent.

Lynn Henning writes in Wednesday's Detroit News that Tigers boss Dave Dombrowski told Cubs counterpart Theo Epstein there was no way he would part with top pitching prospect Jacob Turner in a deal for Garza.

The recent trades of Sean Marshall and Andrew Cashner demonstrate that Epstein is in a full rebuilding mode in his first season as Cubs president. He wants to land some elite prospects, but it won't come from the Tigers' stash.

The Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays are among the other clubs linked previously to Garza.

Hoyer said Tuesday that the club is younger and deeper than it was when he and Epstein took over, and he’s right. All of the aforementioned moves have allowed the Cubs to go six-deep in their rotation.

However, they continue to discuss deals involving right-hander Matt Garza. Hoyer said he isn’t afraid of building a rotation around Garza, but should a team approach the Cubs with a trade tilted in the Cubs’ favor, they would move Garza, too. Indeed, he acknowledged the team has had talks about Garza with the Detroit Tigers. And should the Tigers agree to include both starting pitcher Jacob Turner and third baseman Nick Castellanos -- Detroit's top two prospects -- my feeling is a deal will get done.

Once Garza is dealt this place is gonna explode. It's like tying a string to your shlong then doing woop woop for an hour then, BOOM! oh yeah baby.

Very insightful stuff from ESPN, hard to believe people actually pay for ESPN Insider.

you know, i honestly am quite happy with keeping Garza. I think he is a legitimately good pitcher, and of course one in the hand is the only reality which exists. two in the bush feels exciting, but Turner becoming even a close approximation of Garza is speculation alone. And sure, the team is a couple years away, but what, exactly, suggests that Garza will not still be a good piece of that competitive Cubs' team? I get that they say they are willing to keep him, but it seems as though really they want to shatter the mold completely. Garza is a really good pitcher; and while it'd be nice to recoup a bit for what still looks like Hendry's having overpaid to acquire the pitcher, that's all in the past. He has been impeccably consistent, and has even began to improve. Furthermore, I believe that Garza becoming more of an adult, tempering his competitive nature, channeling that properly, will happen, to great effect, and not only will his pitching improve, but, and these are the intangible craps that can't be scienced out, i think he would become the ideal teammate for the young pitchers inevitable coming to fruition under the team's new front office planning; a savvy vet who remembers what it was like to be wily and slightly out of control, yet still an excitable cheerleader, who can, in turn, as a result of this personality, use it advantageously amongst his young teammates in a beneficial way which the coaching staff would be unable to do. I truly believe that he will emerge in the next few seasons as the Cubs' seasonal all star (along with Castro), with as good a chance to be in the running for Cy Young awards consistently through his lower 30s. It's nice to imagine prospects, as dreams can be as wide as the imagination frolics. However, Garza is a proven commodity, the likes of which, again, other than Castro, this club does not have. There are other ways in which the team can solidify the team's prospective future while keeping Garza. But, opinions are like :-$
