Not surprised by that. Still, I expect Theo and Jed have a thing or two they want to have done before the convention.

Speaking of which, I didn't see Garza's name on the schedule that came out today.

If he hasn't been dealt by Friday, Theo and Jed are going to be bombarded with questions during the convention. This has been one of the Peavy/Roberts type of "it's inevitable" things already, but I have no idea what to think at this point. I'm just going to remember what the PSD insider guy said and that's that he wouldn't want to be at the same poker table as Theo.

it's not really that big a deal. all they have to say is that they're willing to listen to offers on everybody, but unless they get a deal they really like, they're not dealing away good players.

Yeah, the Cubs being a big market team, they have no need to trade Garza. They're making an attempt to take advantage of a relative down year for available starting pitching. If no team bites on the demands, you still have Matt Garza for 2 years and can certainly focus on re-signing him long term.

Jed Hoyer on MLB Radio on XM/Sirius this hour with Bowden.

He's gonna be on some hot stove show on CSN tonight.

It could just be that anything that was going to get out is already out. If all has been agreed upon and it's just a matter of paperwork at this point there's probably nothing else we're going to here until the official announcement.

It'll be nice to directly compare him to a bad GM.

Reminds me of when they have people like Reynolds, Ripken, or Heyman on Clubhouse Confidential.

I feel like Kenny and the guest smart people are laughing inside whenever those guys say anything. Feels really uncomfortable to watch, actually.

At least he's succeeding as an interviewer!

JIM BOWDEN @JimBowdenESPNxm

Jed Hoyer just told us @mlbnetworkradio that the Cubs are younger and deeper than they were when they started the off-season

When they started the offseason they had a 3 man rotation. Now they have a 6 man rotation. They also have enough backup outfielders to qualify as having a 7th outfielder.

Oddly, the bullpen is far more shallow, since what used to be Marmol-Marshall-Cashner-Wood-Samardzija-Russell now looks to be Marmol-Samardzija-Russell-...

Would it be unreasonable to expect Beliveau to make the jump this season?

EDIT: Also you've got reclamation projects like Corpas and Sonnanstine

At the very least, Jed confirmed talks with the Tigers on Bowden's show. Not that that's surprising at all.

While the pen might not look as strong but their is no shortage of options. Beyond the veterans Marmol, Shark, Russell and Corpas there's Carpenter, Dolis, Beliveau, Gaub, Castillo, Maine, and Weathers. Maybe not better better but Younger and deeper.

This is the perfect season to try out all of our young bullpen arms. Between Dolis, Carpenter. Beliveau, Maine, Gaub, and Mateo, if 3 or 4 stick, it's a great thing. Hopefully, one of Carpenter or Dolis shows enough to turn into a future closer. My guess though, is we'll still add a couple of potential bullpen arms before the season begins.

If 3/4 stick, the Cubs have got it made. I have an odd suspicion Corpas could pan out.

Sonnanstine isn't a reclamation project. He's strictly an injury replacement guy we're stashing at AAA to avoid needing to sign Ramon Ortiz again.

Just finished listening to Jed on MLB radio. He's a good GM so he didn't give away anything. He was asked if he was offered Turner and Castellanos would he accept it for Garza and just laughed and said he wouldn't comment on specific trades but listening between the lines, it confirmed everything we are thinking. He's going to trade him if offered the right package. He maintains that they are willing to sign him long term and build around him. Basically he said everything you'd expect a smart GM to say who is trying to give himself as much leverage as possible in trade negotiations.

They're trying to and want to trade Garza but are committed to getting as much as possible and in order to do that you have to wait until there is some sort of time pressure to get a team to step up. All these leaks about something happening soon is probably just the Cubs trying to creat that urgency. But the thing that gets this trade done, obviously, is when some team puts a package on the table that gives the Cubs high enough caliber talent with longest team control over those players.

And who knows when and if that's going to happen.
