i'm pretty sure he can't comment on that - wouldn't it be tampering? (other than saying "yeah they're good players" or whatever)

Doesnt tampering only apply to free agent signings? But obviously he's not going to comment on specific players either way.

I think it's a balancing act, as far as Garza's concerned. You've got the Yanks, Tigers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and possibly Rangers interested. The Rangers have been known to covet Garza, but have all their eggs in the Darvish basket, unless it falls through. The other trade options are Jurrjens, Wandy, and Floyd, at this point, of which Garza is the most appealing. The FA that are available are Jackson, Oswalt, and Kuroda, all of which have bigtime price tags at the moment, and also are all downgrades on some level from Garza. So, who blinks? Does one of these teams go thru with a move that takes them out? Time's going to become an issue soon, so these teams are going to have to start making their decisions. But, my guess is the fact that Garza is out there has slowed the market down on everyone else, because each of these teams probably prefer him to what else is available.

Agreed. What I'm trying to figure out is what incident/deadline is likely to cause that time pressure? Is it the deadline for Darvish to sign?

If it doesn't get done, that's one more bidder for Garza... so a team who isn't so certain of the outcome might be willing to pay a tad more to get it done before the Rangers get a chance to bid up the price.

But pretty much everybody expects the Rangers will get that deal done. I don't anticipate it'll create much pressure on teams bidding for Garza.

We knew that's who the Cubs were likely targeting but last I'd heard was the Tigers didn't want to trade him if they didn't have to. If they're willing to listen that makes things more interesting and leads me to believe, personally, that the hold up in a Garza deal might not be Turner, but who they're asking for to go along with him.

Assuming a starting pitcher is what they seek, judging by what's available I can't imagine who else would qualify as the right deal.

Detroit's system isn't very deep, so if they've agreed to send Turner, I bet it is hard for them to give up 2 more of their top 5 to 7 guys. If we're holding out for Castellanos though, I have serious doubts as to whether Detroit does it. Every other team we've heard that's involved(other than Marlins, who are out now anyway) has better depth to deal from. But Detroit has the single biggest chip, so that's probably why we're waiting to see if they cave in.

Ding. I agree with this - I think this might be a case (having read that they want 4 top prospects) where going last seemed like a great idea - Garza is the last big dog on the market, but following the 4 player package that Oakland/San Diego got for their guys might be tough. The system thins out fast for Detroit, and a lot of their intriguing 2nd tier guys are recent draft picks.

Mike Newman, in his fangraphs chat, suggested Turner/lefty/Fields is approachable. I think I'd be fine wit Turner/Smyly or Crosby/Brantly/Fields (or someone comparable, not the biggest Fields fan).

toonster, just curious - if, for whatever reason, the Tigers took both Turner and Castellanos off the table, would you trade Garza for all three of the lefties - Smyly/Crosby/Oliver? Or is there not enough of a "sure thing" there for you?

I'm to the point that if I could get Turner/Smyly, I'm not even concerned with what else came with it. Fields, Garcia and Vazquez are all toolsy guys, but I don't think any of them are enough to keep me from doing it, as long as I got the 2 pitchers.

gammons on mlb network says tigers won't even do garza for turner straight-up. fwiw

He's still pissed Theo left Boston. He's really said some dumb Cub related things this offseason. But the best was saying we didn't have but 4 prospects that make the Red Sox top 30. He's lost it.

Ouch, for me, that's tough. While I personally am a gigantic fan of Crosby, he is a big risk, with his injury history and his command woes. Oliver feels like a pen arm, and Smyly, I feel like he's a Travis Wood type, a possible 4/5 that can have good years where he is a solid 3.

It'd be tough to say no to that as well. 3 solid ceiling upper levels arms are tough to turn down.

I don't know. Gut feeling? Probably yes, depending on what the 4th (and perhaps 5th) pieces to the deal were.

To take an offer like that, I think you'd have to get a big upside guy or two as well and the only one I like in their system is Brenny Paulino. All their upside hitters have too far to go, for me to feel comfortable with. In fact, if I couldn't get either Turner OR Castellanos, it' take Porcello(Jeff, I know you hate him), Smyly, Crosby, and Paulino. No interest in Oliver at all.
