I don't think the Yankees would expect to acquire Garza without giving up Montero. Montero is there prized chip, but he doesn't have an everyday spot with them unless its DH. I doubt they want him to just be a DH. He is not good enough defensively to play catcher everyday. I guess they could try him in right, but if they had a chance to add Garza (who is AL East proven) they would do it.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, opposing general managers believe the Cubs will trade Matt Garza.

It will take a significant package of players to get him, but the Cubs might find a match given the lack of quality starting pitchers available in free agency this offseason. Garza, 27, earned $5.95 million in 2011 while posting a 3.32 ERA and 197/63 K/BB ratio over 198 innings. He remains under team control through 2013.

Please make it a highway robbery.

I really don't see any way that happens. I don't see the Cubs getting much more than they gave up for Garza. And if they don't get a lot more than they gave up, it's not worth it.

Well his value is definitely higher now than it was a year ago.

His expected production is certainly up, but he has one fewer years under team control.

i believe the former significantly outweighs the latter

it's not like he's not still relatively cheap and under control for a while

Yeah, exceeding his previous career season by 2 wins is a much bigger deal than having 2 years left on his deal rather than 3.

Plus, consolidating the trade value into fewer than 5 players makes it more worthwhile for the Cubs too.

Yeah, I'd definitely prefer 3 quality somewhat big league ready pieces. We really have no use for someone elses Sam Fuld and Robinson Chirinos.

Not to mention the severe lack of pitching depth in the FA market. I had initially assumed Garza and Castro would be the players we'd build around under the new regime, but it's starting to make a whole lot of sense to explore the possibility of trading Garza. He could land us some really nice players to compliment Castro to help build around.

If Fielder and Pujols are not in the plans, I'd definitely be all for a package built around Montero. However, assuming we did get Monetero for Garza I can't imagine getting too much else in addition. Maybe another one of their top 10-15 prospects and and Fernando Perez. Gio Gonzalez and Jair Jurrgens are also on the market, and I bet that the A's for one would love to get their hands on Montero. No sure where the Braves would put him, but I don't think that Jurrjens would net Montero anyway.

It is guys like Montero who I would think we would be going after. We gave up some far and away prospects to get Garza, but now he should net us a couple of ready major league talents.

He already is a really nice player to compliment Castro. Granted, getting 3 would be better than 1, but I think the odds of that are extremely slim. There aren't many packages that could reasonably obtained that's going to be better than one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL for under $15Mil for the next 2 years.

I think you need to find a team more desperate than the Yankees would be. Is Florida a viable trade candidate and do they have prospects to sell? The Nationals sure seem like a team that wants to make a splash someway somehow. Or could Garza be the type of pitcher Seattle could sell to their fans after dealing away Hernandez?

What about Wil Myers? I know we have a log jam in the outfield, but he was a catcher that they moved to the outfield. Couldn't we stick him at first? Kansas City has already stated that they don't want to pay for starting pitching, but they will trade for it. They also need it, badly.

Moose Tacos could be another target on their squad.

I brought him up a page or two with no replies, and i'd definitely love to snag him. Though i'd probably still just keep him in the outfield.

Who is this dude? If that's real, best baseball name ever, hands down!

What a horribly written sentence by Sullivan.

Epstein has to decide whether it makes more sense to follow Rays GM Andrew Friedman’s strategy of trading a top starter who is still under contract, or basically giving up on 2012 and thinking about the future.

He basically said "Epstein has to decided whether to give up or not try.

It's the same choice Sullivan has to make every day he goes into work.

If I'm trading Garza, here's something of a template for what I'd be looking for.

A pre-arbitration SP that I can reasonably expect to put up 2+ WAR going forward. Doesn't have to be high ceiling. Someone like Holland, Ogando, Porcello, you get the idea.

A top prospect from that system with elite upside(think 5+ WAR). Preferably at least at AA, although the quality of the other players in the deal can affect that.

A third player, ranging from low ceiling and MLB ready(potential setup man? RH 4th OF?), to high ceiling and far from MLB ready(like Hak-Ju Lee last year)

What does that look like put together? Detroit giving Porcello, Turner, and Ruffin maybe? Perhaps Texas giving Holland, Olt, and Mendes? The specifics aren't super important, but that's the direction I'd like to see if they do explore trading him, with the obvious caveat that you hope someone gets desperate enough to bowl you away with something even better.
