that starting nine is a nightmare scenario

I guess it all depends one how most of these guys end up.

they're not going to end up good

3B, 2B, and LF is a nightmare.

If Castro could develope some solid power he could be a 3 or at least a 5 hitter. Jackson at leadoff and Lake could be a good 2 hitter and if people don't have enough faith in Vitters at least being a good 6 hitter they may as well just give up on him. Cespedes would be the key because if he can be a productive middle of the order guy it pulls it all together with Fielder as the obvious 4.

I have a hard time seeing Lake becoming a high enough OBP guy to warrant being anywhere near the top of a major league lineup...but then again, I suppose anybody could be anything.

And I did give up on Vitters a long time ago.

That roster you posted looks worse than the BA fantasy lineups we'd talk about back in 02 do in hindsight.

In other words, knowing what I know now about Corey Patterson and Bobby Hill, I'd still rather have them. And I'm only sort of kidding.

Yup. Lake's more of an interesting 7/8 guy type hitter. The Cubs would need one of 3B or LF badly upgraded (Vitters is a rather average to poor bat if he's playing LF) and Cespedes to be above average or better in that scenario or if Cespedes was just average they would need upgrades at both 3rd and LF. I don't think the lineup is that scary, but it definitely would need an upgrade or two to be a contending lineup.

why would we start all those guys we could just re-sign all of our current infielders and keep the kelton-montanez-hill-choi collection going

I wonder if the Rangers would entertain Profar as a return? That could conceivably move Castro off SS, but that would be one hell of a nice problem to have to deal with?

Matt Garza for Yonder Alonso and Travis Wood. Who hangs up first? I figure asking for Alonso and Mike Leake is a bit too ambitious.

The Cubs should. Neither one of those guys are impact players, just good, cheap players. If you're trading Garza, you'd want to get at least one guy that has the potential to be an All-Star.

No way they'd do it. Garza is good, but he's probably not worth a top 5 prospect.

there's a great writeup on fangraphs about Garza's breakout

Most of the time these explanations are just that — rationalizations with a sprinkle of truth and a dollop of imagination. But not every time. Jose Bautista, for example, completely revamped his swing. Matt Garza looks like he could be another legitimate improvement. Is he the 5 WAR stud he was in 2011? No, we can’t just throw out the rest of his career. But there is reason to believe that he is better than he was before. His peripherals entirely support his performance and can be explained by a shift in pitch selection. Of course it’s possible that the league adjusts in 2012, but there is no reason to dismiss 2011 as a fluke.

I could not see any scenario where the Cubs would actively pursue trading him initially, therefore I wouldn't trade him right now except for something completely made up.

#Rangers can't be ruled out on starters. Have shown strong interest in Garza in past. #Cubs' new regime willing to move him. #Cubs #MLB

Hopefully willing to move him for a lot.

A's asked for Mike Stanton in exchange for Gio Gonzales.

Cubs ask for Stanton in exchange for Garza. How quickly do the Marlins hang up?

Who said that?

The Rangers seem the most interested. I don't know much about the Rangers farm system, but I wonder if we could start the conversation with Alexi Ogando.

I'd prefer not move Garza, but if we do I'd expect something similar to the Greinke return.
