He also said something about not getting the most out of the talent they had, which is basically a managerial issue.

I don't think it is. I think it alluded a bit more to the fact that the Cubs always went after very physically gifted players who were not necessarily great baseball players, or were extremely flawed in some aspect of their game. Soriano is a ridiculously talented baseball player. Ronny Cedeno was a gifted physical talent as well, so was Patterson and several others, including Vitters. It's more about the type of player they used to prefer and the development of that player.

Well obviously some of it is bringing in the wrong players, some of it is doing a poor job of teaching young players.

And that's not really on the manager. Managers don't teach players how to convert from raw physical talents to really good baseball players, that is what developmental people do. And the Cubs have been lacking.

True, I think what I was thinking didn't come through in what I said somehow. Certainly not arguing that point.

I'm glad that Theo's a Dunkin' coffee guy.

Boston is the city of Dunkin Donuts, there are something like 120 DD's in Boston city limits alone. DD is the best coffee.

Seriously. They are all over New England. When I lived in New Hampshire, the town I lived in (population 5,000) had exactly 6 things other than houses. A gas station, a police station, a high school, tiny office building, and 2 Dunkin Donuts.

When I moved back to Chicago, I couldn't believe that if I wanted Dunkin, I couldn't just drive down there street wherever I was and find a Dunkin.

God I love trolling @thekapman.

What did you say and did he respond?

He asked if anyone had questions for him to ask Epstein.

@thekapman Ask Theo if he shares your opinion that ARam wasnt the best 3B in NL last season. Actually dont & prevent his head from exploding.

Rubbing hands together in anticipation.

Damned this is one of those rare time I wish I had CSN

After some deliberation, I added the sports pack to my DTV package last night, just so I could be sure I could see/DVR it. And it had to be in HD so I could see Theo in all his glory.

Posted this in the compensaion thread in Transactions but thought this would be good to post here too..

According to WEEI, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig is likely to have to step in and determine compensation headed to the Red Sox in exchange for Theo Epstein's defection to the Cubs.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to the commissioner," said the website's source. Epstein, the new president of baseball operations in Chicago, who initially was on the outside looking in during negotiations, can now negotiate directly with new Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. That change could result in another schism that requires an arbiter to determine compensation. Epstein insists the Red Sox won't be receiving a bounty. "I can't get into the exact stipulations [of the understanding between the clubs]," Epstein said. "[but] it's been important to me that the Red Sox baseball operations has continuity, and it's important to me that Ben succeeds and that the Red Sox succeed. While there may be a fit at some point for somebody who may be blocked over with the Red Sox to come to the Cubs, there's not going to be any kind of raid."

Man, I can't wait to see what the Cubs do this winter.

Yeah, this is going to be a really interesting winter. As soon as Hoyer is officially in position, a lot of stuff is going to start happening. It may not be what many are hoping for (spending spree), but it will be interesting.

I could see it being fairly quiet if Hoy-stein just wants to keep financial flexibility. All the contracts coming off the books, they may be hoping for ideal trade targets in the next few years rather than free agents.

I could see it, but I think it would be a mistake. The Cubs remain starved for 1B in the system and there are two great ones available who are on division rivals. This type of player doesn't become available every year, and most of the time when they do, the two biggest spenders, Boston and NYY are much more likely to get those players. An improved system should also lessen the negative impact of a decline by either player 5-6 years from now.

I got the feeling Ramirez will go and Z will stay, anyone else get that feeling? Either that or Theo was hinting at the Cubs needing him to keep what trade value he has up. Too soon to tell but I think the Cubs will take some offensive chances and throw a lot of money at pitching.

Someone please shoot Phil Rogers for riding the Bryan LaHair bandwagon, I am fine with him on the bench but getting significant starting time is silly for a large market team.

No. I don't see any scenario where Z pitches for us again.

I don't think it would be a mistake at all. I don't think either Pujols or Fielder are good choices to give huge long contracts to. That's a Jim Hendry move. That's a flashy move. Pujols is aging and is going to be well past his prime before halfway through the contract he wants. Fielder is not good defensively, something that Theo has said is one of the check marks that he looks at when looking at signing someone to a big, long term contract. Never mind that Fielder's body type screams physical issues down the road, most likely back and knee issues. I don't think Theo will sign Pujols or Fielder and I think that's a very good thing.
